Safety Razors

In another thread I related how the Slant/38C came to be thanks to the excellent customer service of Dovo/Merkur. http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showpost.php?p=277867&postcount=1 My friend and fellow Slant aficionado Der Fritzer dubbed it the Schräger Vorschlaghammer» ("Slant Sledgehammer"). A fitting title for one of the finest razors I have ever shaved with. The Slant Hammer is a Merkur Slant head on a Merkur 38C handle. My first shave with the Slant / 38C hammer was a single...
Overall, I'd say I'd rate all 3 blades the same, as they are all about equally sharp, quality is the same, etc. Professional = Very sharp blades, but personally I am not as fond of the pro's as I am the super pro's, or the pro guards, as I tend to get the most irritation/nicks/weepers with the standard pro blades. I have a very thick/tough beard, and the pro's are just too flexible for me personally. Super Pro = Scary sharp and VERY robust. My personal favorites, as they shave smooth...

Worst blade ever. If you care about your face, avoid this blade. Extremely dull and very uncomfortable. Useful for cutting some papers, but not facial hair. Terrible. I got them for free so the price was great...otherwise they were horrible. I am throwing away the other two I got.
I just got this from slcsteve (thanks, Steve!) on Friday and fired it up this morning. I should say wound it up! You just turn the bulbous end on the already bulbous handle and it vibrates like any of the Gillette "power" versions. Price: This was an expensive razor in its day; mine included the original invoice from 1966 and it was 24.95! I got mine for only $17.50. Considering that most blade razors at that time were 1/10th the price, I think I got a great deal. Thanks again, Steve...
I bought this J3 Regular Super Speed on eBay for a ridiculously cheap price. It arrived in quite fine condition, but I was surprised when I first looked at it. I have been using a Slant, HD, Progress, and most recently, the 38C. Although the Super Speed is all metal with the classic Gillette butterfly head, it looks like a toy razor compared to any of the Merkurs. It is light and has a short, thin handle. I honestly did not anticipate being all that impressed by its shaving ability given its...
On a business trip, realized I had forgotten my razor, bought a Gillette Sensor 3-blade disposable. cheap, and you can throw it away at the end of the trip. First part of the shave went just fine: lathered up with Proraso. Picked up the razor and started to shave, using B&B method of successive passes. Not quite as sharp as my Feather blade in a Merkur HD. I could hear the hairs being cut, and there was a bit more resistance than I would encounter from any of my DE's. But here's the...

These blades last for a long time, are very sharp, and provide a very smooth shave. I received them as a sample pack from suffolksupplies, and have enjoyed them very much so far. I'll break the ratings down by category: Price: I got these for free, so the price was good for me. However, as suffolksupplies is the only place I know how to get them, I will rate the price according to what he charges for them. For a pack of 100 blades you can get them for about $32, shipped to the US...
A Friend got me these the other day. I had not seen a review of them so posted on the forum if anyone had heard of them. A few had but only one other person had used them so I thought I would turn B&B guinea pig! I must preface this review by saying I am a newbie and have only tried Merkurs up to this point, I am to sort that out soon by ordering a sample pack of letterk. So please be aware this review is based on a comparison of only the Merkurs! Having said that I have shaved with...

Much of the commentary regarding Gem razors is along the lines of “it tore my face up” or “those things scare me”. Most of these statements seem to be directed at the Micromatic, and maybe with good reason. I tried the Micromatic once, albeit early during my wetshaving learning curve, and it kind of scared me too. I was so spooked I finished the shave with a SuperSpeed. So I will grant that some Gems may be troublesome. But I have experienced some of the best shaves of my six-month...

This a beautiful looking razor, with a spiraled barber pole effect handle. It is a two piece and the blade is changed by unscrewing the base and pulling the top of the razor off. As with all the Merkur razors it is a solidly built piece and has a lovely chrome finish. In size it is very close to the Futur although the head of the razor is very similar to the Merkur HD and similar. This is also a very hefty piece and weighs almost the same as the Futur. In terms of shaving it is superb. This...
Yikes! This is an interesting razor. It can be ordered on line from Muhle-Pinsel direct, or there's a couple of other sites where you can find it. I got lucky and managed to find it at a local store for $35. Here's a pic alongside a Merkur HD for comparison- The handle is nice and chunky and feels good in the hand; well balanced. The head resembles an old comb style Gillette. Looks can be deceiving however. While an old style Gillette is rather mild, the R89 isn't. In short, if you...

These blades have cropped up on B&B from time to time, and have been discussed here. In assessing them, I should defer to the judgment of those who have been using these blades for longer than I have (or will), so read this review with the caveat that I have only used this blade three times: twice in a 1949 Super Speed, once in a Merkur Progress. Please also note that the picture is a stock photo; the packs I have are slightly less green and do not come with two free blades. The place...
I admit that ever since 'discovering' proper wet-shaving with a safety razor and a badger brush/shave cream/Moss Scuttle, I've been a sucker for picking up packets of blades just to give them a test. The funny thing, though, is that the more expensive the blades, the more useless they seem to be:biggrin: I was in a local pharmacy, and spotted these blades which I had heard were positively dreadful. IIRC I paid about $11CAD for them. I had previously paid about $15USD for 100 Israeli...
I started searching for good affordable blade since I bought my Merkur progress last year. I have tried Wilkinson Sword Classic, Merkur, Tesco, Personna & Gillette Platinum but Nacet for me are the best. They last as long & with the quality of Merkur, but provide a really smooth shave. There also sharp & work really well with my adjustable razor. The packaging is a bit old fashioned & they are quite hard to find. I found them through ebay from suffolksupplies.
Ahh....my first taste of DE. How sweet it is. I will always have a soft spot in my heart for this giant mega-corporation of shaving world domination, being manufactured by a giant faceless nameless Chinese mega subsidiary. "Developing" nations seem to have a loose grasp of conservation and as such, do not use the products that we use in the same way, or for the same reasons. Enter the gillette rubie DE blade. My first experience for this blade was getting a haircut and one of these was used...
My only other experience with a safety razor is with the Merkur HD so this short review will essentially be my feelings of how this razor compares. The price of the razor couldn't be beat, I paid 20.00 for a vintage razor in excellent condition, Ebay can be a good friend! For quality I give it a 10/10, it's hard not to, they really built things well in the 'good 'ole days'. Not much to say here, made of steel and not a spot of rust on mine. The biggest difference between the HD and...

I keep trying the Walmart blades because it would be so convenient if I liked them. They are very cheap, easy to obtain, and come in an efficient and attractive package. But, alas, they just don't give me even a half decent shave. Partly because I have curly hair (bordering on kinky) with a complicated growth pattern, I have two sensitive spots: my neck is prone to irritation, and the space between my lower lip and chin is hard to get smooth. With a really good blade (Derby, Israeli, Swede)...

I find it hard to believe no one has reviewed these. I have had the pleasure of using and have had a good experience with them. The first time was a bit rough but I think it was a bad blade because the other ones I used were just great! Price is a bit steep and they are hard to get. I find them to be sharp but not the sharpest out their. Packaging is not much just a dispenser and the blades say Gillette on them that is it. The rest gets a 10 in my book. Longevity lasted a...
Price: Pricing is exellent on this one. I got mine from SSLstudios/René here at B&B. Quality: Feels well built. Its no Merkur but compared to some other low-price razors this one is nice. No gaps or bent pieces. It aligns the blade as it should. User Friendly: Yes. Its a good razor. Grip: As all non-knurled metal razors it can be a bit slippery when wet, but the twists on the handle makes it quite grip-able. Ease of Blade Replacement: Very easy, as it is a TTO there are no...
