I daresay that most of us have plenty of soaps appropriate for preparing ourselves for a visit to a house of ill repute. Rose, lavender, and violet scents abound. But what if your day’s agenda includes capping a burning oil well, or capturing a dangerous criminal? Will your present soaps really prepare you for a day of such “macho” pursuits? Would John Wayne use your soap? Grandpa’s Wonder Pine Tar Soap may be just what you need. I saw this in a catalog and just had to buy a few bars...
I most recently used Col. Conk Bay Rum -- a very respectable, well-established brand -- but I think this soap is even better. First off, I bought it for $3.00 (!!) on eBay, which is an amazing bargain, especially considering that it is a quite large cake. Secondly, it has a more lingering and subtle scent (which could be the addition of the ginger). It is a rather hard, brown cake, which made me a bit nervous about the lather, but this concern proved to be unfounded. Although it isn't the...
Price $8.99 which includes a plastic storage container. Quality Nothing but the finest natural ingredients, no preservatives & the finest essential oils. Scent I should mention that I am partial to this offering as I had a hand in it's development. My original inspiration was the Molton Brown Black Pepper offerings. Earlier this year, I had talked with Mama Bear about making a black pepper soap but she thought it would burn while shaving so I decided it would not be a...

Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood Herbal Shaving Soap is one of the many offerings of a hard milled ~100g cake in a wooden bowl. In this case, the soap fills the bowl up to the rim. The presentation is nice, and on the upper end of the scale. It is priced accordingly as well (street = ~$22 for soap & bowl, ~$12 for soap refill) This was the first soap/cream product that I got after switching from electric/Mach 3/canned foam. I had no idea what sandalwood should smell...
So there have been a number of reviews of MamaBear's products before. If you want to check them out, here's a couple. Spiced Apple Cider, Patchouli, and Joel's review of MamaBear Soaps!. I felt that I needed to post one on this amazing Sandalwood Vanilla because it is now my favorite shaving soap. PRICE http://www.bear-haven.com/page3.html For $6.99, this soap was impossible for me to resist. In fact I purchased a few to satisfy my SSAD. QUALITY This stuff is amazing and just feels...

This product has many names: Kent, Mitchell's Wool Fat or MWF. It's a great product that contains Lanolin!

This is a treat for anyone who's after a shave stick that gives top quality lather, and great skincare during and after a shave, and costs next to nothing. It smells and feels just like its bowl counterpart, although it's a tallow based stick, whereas the bowl's glycerin based. True, at 50 ml, it's small, but it'll sure last a heck of a long time, and give several months of shaving enjoyment. Jeff you just can't beat this soap stick for scent, latherability, comfort, and overall...
How do you improve a great product? I don't know, but Mama Bear has done it! Spiced Apple Cider Price $6.99 for a puck of high quality shaving soap is a bargain. Not to mention the practical container, and the 5 star customer service. Quality You can expect any product from Mama Bear to be made with care and the best ingredients available. Scent I was actually surprised by the scent when I first opened the container. I expected it to fill the room with holiday cheer. In...
Well, it would appear that I have spent $16 for a nice little wooden bowl, because the contents is definitely not shaving soap. I gave this soap a few swirls with my damp little Rooney travel brush (the bowl was too small for the big brush), and coated the bristles with what would normally be plenty of soap. The densely packed Rooney holds plenty of water, and I've always been able to muster good lather directly on the ol' face. I proceeded to lather one side of my face -- so far so good...
Hey! THis is good stuff! Like I said in the synopsis, good light scent, great slickness (which I think is common for glycerine bars). The only shortomcing I can mention is not a lot of lather. Price is not bad either, and seems to be lasting quite well. Scent is Cedarwood, Rosewood, Frankincense, Geranium, Lime, Pine Needle and Lemon essential oils. Has a woodsy-citrus aroma with a hint of floral-spice. Light and pleasing smell. The cedar and lemon dominates. Nuff said! Try...

I've used just about every St. Charles Shave soaps out there and this is my all-time favorite. While I've enjoyed most SCS soaps, the scent of the Orange Sorbet is so different and so delicious, it trumps the rest. It's like shaving with a warm creamsicle. It makes me want to keep licking my liips, even after knowing it tastes like soap. Mated with the typically superb SCS performance and you have a winner. Price: $6 for a large cake or $12 for a huge chunk of soap in a wood or stainless...
Another player in QED's glycerin shave soap lineup, this Bay Rum is just amazing. As with all of Charles' soaps, the performance is second to none. I'm just thrown back by how awesome my shaves are with his soaps. I'll go out on a limb here and say that there is no shave soap that I know of that can get as close and comfortable as QED's. I know that's totally subjective, but I just don't see it in any other brand. Lots of soaps provide great shaves, but QED's just are in that rare air of...

I received a Palmolive soap stick as part of a HUGE shipment from my friend Rene (SSL Studio) in Holland this past week, and I decided to take a test lathering the other night. It's very easy to get it going, the soap smells nice, and it does a pretty darn good job of moisturizing as well. I had this stuff a few years ago, so I'm really no stranger to it! Another good point about it, it's very handy for travelling. Jeff

I never heard of this soap until recently, when I met up with a couple of members of this board from Holland, where this soap is from. It's very attractively packaged, with a nice holder to keep the stick in place, and does it lather and smell nice! I can do a good 2 pass shave just with the lather on the brush, because it's a very rich, creamy lather. The scent is also very exotic, and it lingers! Dank U Viel, Rene!  Jeff

This soap is quite well known here in Montreal, and I've noticed that this blue-bowled version is becoming more and more popular. The scent is completely different from it's black-bowled counterpart, definitely more perfumy, but nice, and I think the lather is very decent, although not as slick and creamy as other soaps that I have. The overall shave, moisturization and skincare are good as well. Price-wise, 5.99$ is not a prohibitive sum of money for a 125 ml bowl. This soap's good enough...

OK - I'll admit it. I am a huge fan of the No 88 scent! Based on the folks that I've spoken to; this is basically a love it or hate it type of situation. So, please view this opinion from the camp that LOVES it.... That said: At $39, this soap probably has to be the worst soap value that I can remember purchasing. If you have the scratch to buy it in it's (pictured) black glass bowl; that combination will set you back a total of $89 plus shipping! Now that the 'elephant in the...

Here's another example of what I mean by "old-school" and traditional. This soap has been around since long before I was born. I can remember seeing it when I traveled to England, but since I was using other kinds like DR Harris, or Taylors, etc, I never gave it any thought. Well, I recently received a bowl, and I put it to the test this morning. I took a good shower, and then splashed some hot water on my face, and then after wrapping it in a hot towel for a few minutes, I took my Omega...
I ordered the Patchouli/TeaTree/Peppermint shave stick while placing my QED order after seeing many favorable comments about the scent here on B&B. Well, I couldn't be happier. Included in my box (which contained several sticks and some other goodies) was a bag of informational pages containing executive summaries about the products that I purchased. This is a very clever idea! Its nice to have have this as a point of reference, but moreover it shows that Charles has really put a lot of...

Im a newbie to this stuff so I will try my best here. I purchased an old bowl of this online in the search of the old nostalgic barber salon soap (this was before I found this site). The shave soap was never used and in pristine condition. Upon arriving the first thing I did was to clean the old wooden bowl as well as run several passes of a bristle brush over the top to remove any old aging stuff. The scent is a gentle coconut aroma backed with slight cardamom woody notes. It...
