Advice for a watch please

I'm looking to replace my Skagen with something better-made.

1) I could go with mechanical or quartz but if mechanical I want it to be pretty accurate and low-maintenance. If quartz I prefer self-powered so I can keep it sealed.

2) I prefer thin (<10 mm) and light.

3) Probably stainless steel band and case.

4) I like classic, simple designs. Ideal probably white face with roman numerals and the date.

5) I'm looking for good quality but not a collector's item. Ideally <$500 but could go higher if coerced.

I've looked (on-line) at Tissot, Gevril, Seiko Kinetic, Citizen Eco, Seiko Spirit (posted in earlier B&B thread, but doesn't seem to be available) and Jacques Lemans as watches that are appealing.

PS: I love some of the Omega's but don't think I'll decide to shell out that kind of cash.

Any advice on brands, quality indicators, where to buy or otherwise, would be appreciated.

I wouold be interested in answers to this question, especially the preference for a thin watch. I always wear long sleeve shirts for work and would like to have the watch fit under the cuff! This can't happen with those 10-20mm thick watches!

(If someone could move this thread to "The Haberdashery" forum perhaps there would be some replies.)

Did you already consider Nomos?

In all honesty, I don't know their exact prices.
Usually here in Amsterdam under 1000 USD.

I like the parameters you have set out. Id be very interested in what is out there that fits. I don't blame you on the Omega though. Nice looking watches but from what I have seen they don't hold their value very well, better than Tags do though.

I don't own anything that fits into the style that you seem to be going for but I'd like to. Right now I mostly have larger Dive/Sport watches. The Seiko Classic is a nice looking "classic" style watch. It's reasonable in price and comes in both automatic and quartz version.

Good luck in your search.

You could pick up a really nice used/vintage hand wound watch within that price range.

Agreed. Have a look at a vintage Omega Seamaster. Reasonably priced, classy, and a decent investment if you play your cards right. I have my Dad's and plan on sending it out for service and some replacement parts. Mine is from the early 60's, is made of stainless, and has the beautiful grains of rice bracelet.
