I'll get mine out and take a photo this evening. It shaved very well, how thin is the thin cap.
I will have to compare it to the other one I have to see if they are the same. I wasn't aware there where different ones.
Thin cap from a 1916 OT. I had to file the corners due to dropped damage. It’s a very nice razor and highly effective.View attachment 960304View attachment 960305View attachment 960306
I’ll give a shout to @REV579 . He’s the OT expert.
Enjoy the movie and thank you, BrothermanI don’t count myself an expert as much as I try to be a sponge. A Single Ring was the shift away from the Double Ring, while still incorporating a stem to retain the cap. At the base of the ferrule, where it fits inside the barrel, there is a “ring-like” protrusion, which is not carried over to the 1921+ 3-piece ferrules. Prior to the 1921 102’s, they all had the “ring”.
I don’t think they were ever really called a “Single Ring” by anyone other than enthusiasts and others trying to articulate a designation that could be understood. But, a stemmed 102 is generally referred to as a Single Ring today. I’m sitting in a movie theater with REV579, Jr. waiting for Captain Marvel to start, otherwise I’d check my samples.
Just got home and I confirmed my suspicions about the ferrules. The only ferrules that did not resemble a noticeable ring are both later models and from England.Enjoy the movie and thank you, Brotherman
I believe you have it. As for the difference between the ABC and 102, it really depends on a couple of things. The ABC razors produced from 1910 through 1917 will use, what appears to be, the same comb as the Gillette 102. The cap is essentially the same with the only noticeable exception being the shape of the locating posts. The Gillette locating posts have a more "pointed" or "cone" shape, while the ABC locating posts are more rounded on the end.Thank you @REV579 glad you enjoyed the movie. Quality time with the kids is always important.
So if I understand correctly the razors I have and the razor @Twelvefret has are both old types mine would be commonly referee to as a ball end old type, and his would be commonly referred to as a single ring old type. Is that right?
Also how different is the head on an ABC
After shaving with the ball end I want one even more.

I have not shaved with an ABC or 102 only 9 times this year out of approx 50 recorded shaves.
For example, yesterday:
