The Best of the Vintage

So, When I started with DE's I was a bit hesitant of the vintage razors, but luckily Merkur provides an amazing option. I love my HD. But, I have recently gotten over my vintage phobia and wanted to explore the wold of vintage DE's. I realized I have a little antique store two blocks from my house and I called them yesterday. I live where no good shave stuff is around. The lady on the phone said "oh ya. We got a lot of vintage double edges, Gillette, Schick's, a few straights. The Gillettes are about $15 and they go down from there."

Right in my own back yard! I am going over today to browse. Having shyed away from this area before, I feel like I am decently versed on brushes, creams, and blades. But, I know nothing about vintage DEs. What are some of the "gems" I should keep my eye out for, and how can I ID them? The lady said razors come through frequently. I would like to at least pick up one. If not to use now, to insure I have something to use for the son whenever he come along.

Here is a link to Mr Razors site with just about any Gillette you can imagine, and a great tool for Iding old razors. Take a look through and get an idea of what you are looking at before you go.

It may not be the easiest to remember all the details, so a revisit to the site with the razor in hand is often required as well.

Enjoy, if you are anythign like me, you will spend a good bit of time drooling and picking out your next victim to hunt for!

Personally, I would buy every one they had for $15 or under, at least the double edge ones. Single edge or injectors could be had for less, unless they were in fantastic condition.

I was thinking the same thing... pick em all up and then post some pictures. We can help with IDs if you want as well.

I can also tell you which ones are absolutely good so you can ship them to me and get rid of those horrible Razors.....:lol::lol:

Wow! So helpful! I love how quick forum members are to rush to someones aid and lighten their load/carry(or shave with) their burden

So are you saying that if its a Gillete, and its vintage, and its under $15 its probably worth it regardless if its not trashed? She said "Sometimes we get the ones with the numbers on them in" I was assuming she meant an adjustable. after looking at the link that was just provided, thats what I want. Maybe I should just hold out for one of those? There is a second antique store right next to this one. They wouldn't pick up the phone, but I will swing in there too.

Buy them all, and resell them here for the cost paid + shipping. Spread the love, and keep the ones you want. :)

Whatever you do buy the three-piece ones too....they are less expensive generally...and in my view the ultimate score. All those fancy adjustable etc are fine, but a three-piece is a wonderful tool.

Make an offer...all of them for a certain amount. She may be happy to get rid of them all.

Exactly! After that, we'll guide you through the rest. Not to worry, you won't lose money. But test them to see if they work properly. Do the silo doors open and close relatively smoothly. Are there major cracks in the barrels or at that necks. Hair line fractures are the norm. And as noted, do buy the 3 pieces. They are amazing. But be sure all the pieces are there. Have fun. Take pics in the store and post them if you want, even before buying them, you'll get rapid feedback here and we'll tell you what's up. We're living vicariously through your adventure. Nuts right? Go for it!

If you see any that look like any of these buy them and I will buy them from you at your profit:

Or, post pictures on BST and let other have a chance at them.

Good grief, talk about shameless extortion. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain, new guy. If you come across anything that looks like that, buy it up, clean it up and wollow in pure unadulterated lather catcher bliss!!!!:biggrin:

If you can get any pictures that would be awesome but I'm also with Guido, if you can get something under $15 it usually worth it... Depending on the condition of course.

I agree with most of the "<$15=buy" crowd, but if you want to be more discriminating, do this.

Go the Mr Razor's site, and learn the main types.

Buy any New, New Improved/Standard, or Goodwill you find that isn't mangled. Many people are actively looking for these to make up a collection.

Any Tech in good or better condition.

And Old that seems tight and fairly clean with good handle. Any Single-Ring or Double-Ring is fair game. Plain-jane Olds need to be in pretty good shape to fetch $20 shipped.

The TTO models never really sang to me, so I'll leave it to others to tell you the best models to grab there.

How are they set on straights? Let me know if they have any cheap, no big nicks on the edge, and what the names are. Blade width and shape would be a good thing. Finder's fees are available for good brands going low.
