Reknot?

I need some help. Recently I lost my prized unknown badger brush to an unfortunate cracking of its marble handle. Nasty break, not salvageable at all. The knot is still firmly inside the remnants of the handle as only 1/4 of the handle sheered off. What is the safest way to extract the knot in order to prevent damaging it?

I would use a hammer too, but I wouldn't just bash away.
I'd use a hammer and chisel and try to crack the marble on it's already existing grain.

Use the hammer careful. I have done this a few times, so go to it careful, not just one blow. On other materials, I often use a saw to free the knot. I have done a few re-handles of Omega brushes, and here it is easier to saw off the handle.
One of the reasons I do not care for stone, ceramic or glass as handles: One drop on the sink or the floor and it is gone....:w00t:

Thanks for the note of caution. I'll probably do the deed tomorrow. It's hard saying goodbye to a friend.

Also, you probably already thought about it, wear safety glasses... It doesn't take much to have a piece flying in your eye!

All right. On to the next step. Where do I get a brush handle?

You could buy a vintage one off ebay but then, chances that you have the same knot size are very slim.

Maybe Cooncatbob could make one for you if you send the measurements.
