Performance issue with sampler....

Hello All. I have been working through a Col. Conk sampler pack, and have had particularly high hopes for the Bay Rum soap. However, now that I have 2 shave's behind me with the sample, I'm not too thrilled. I love the AS, but the soap seems to lather quite dry. The Lime sample was great, scent and performance. I simply can't get the Bay Rum to perform as well. I intend to lather directly on the sample tomorrow to see if this helps. It usually does when a Williams puck is being difficult. Anyone have any other ideas?

Are you getting enough soap? It's hard to load a brush from a sample sliver sometimes, you've got to really pay attention at the beginning sometimes.

I'm not sure how you're using it right now, but you can try rubbing the dry sample across the bottom of a dry lathering bowl until you have enough to start lathering, that should allow you to get more surface area as the soap rubs off onto the bowl. Hopefully, that mad sense. Don't be stingy with that sample either. They don't give you a whole lot, and trying to get too many shaves out of such a small sample might just leave you with a bunch of crappy shaves.

It's not always recommended because some soap companies vary their recipes between their bowl soaps and their shave sticks as some soaps/scents may be too heavy to rub directly onto your face without lathering first, but you could try using it like a shave stick.
Also FWIW with my Conk samples I found it easiest to just face lather them especially the lime.

I don't know what to tell you... I've heard it said that VDH and Conk are made from the same soap base, but the Conk's Bay Rum just doesn't do it for me while VDH is plenty workable.

Can't get a decent lather out of the BR if I put a chain gang on it.:thumbdown

I was able to get really good lather and shaves out of the lime sample, and the size of the sample sliver is actually of decent size. Also, I get wonderful use out of VDH. I'll give it another go in the morning...we'll see.

Before I finished off my puck of Bay Rum, I found I had to use a *lot* of product in order to get a really thick, slick lather that would be enough for 3-4 passes. I also generally squeeze and shake most of the water out of my brush and then add water to the lather bowl by hand insead. Seemes easier to add a bit more water than a bit more product when mixing the lather.

Anyway, it seems compared to AOS soap, Ogalalla and C&E, I needed a lot more of Col Conk to get a lather I liked (with the Bay Rum at least).
