Kiita Or Asagi?

Hello All,

Here is a new stone that I just got from Takeshi (aframestokyo).....He advertised the stone as a Nakayama Kiita, but upon receiving the stone I can't help but notice the Asagi tendencies it has....I'd say it looks more Kiita'ish when wet, though....

So what say you...do you think this stone is more Asagi or more Kiita? I guess some pics would help, huh...

Hi JP, nice rock!

In my limited jnat experience I would say that it looks kiita to me

Thanks!!

Now that I've lapped it (Used Atoma 400, 600, 1200) I definitely agree that it looks more kiita than anything else...or does it??

Here's a pic of it freshly lapped...

Cool...I am excited to test this one out as this is my first Kiita! I will post a report asap....I guess it's pretty evident that my JNAT identifying skills leave a lot to be desired!!! haha

Well, I think you have too many stones so send it to me and I'll test it for a while and let you know.:wink2:

Hmm, let me think about it...:001_tongu

Question: Is the presence of a Kan pattern something that's inherent to Kiitas only or can other stones have it too?

OK, here's the real reason I thought it might've been an Asagi....Here is the stone in question side-by-side with my Nakayama Tomae Asagi (to the left)...both have similar coloring, no?

Hard to say. Kiita is generally considered yellow and not orange, so if the color is more orange-ish like rust as are the outer prominent circle(s), then it's likely an asagi with circular yake (sunrise) patterns. The circular patterns are called kan. For an outrageous example of a kan pattern, take a look at Gamma's stone he posted recently.

Next question, what color is the slurry with a diamond plate? If it's pure kiita, it should be pure yellow. If it's a halfsie, it should be kind of green, a mixing of blue and yellow.

Here's an example of an asagi from Takeshi, but it's a lot kiita by appearance with some light mizo blue asagi areas that turn the slurry greenish. Truth is, it's a half and half. It's nice, one of the better razor hones I have though I'm always looking for more... It's not really hard, about like you'd expect of a kiita, but very fine and polishes too much for laminated knives, but just great for razors or microbevels on knives.

Cheers, Steve

Good luck with that one! Nice stone. I though you were done buying (until the next one haha!) let us know how you make out with it.

Yep, most types of stones can show kan. Here's a bad image of an akepin showing a faint kan (circular) pattern on the left side. The tree-ring like patterns are called mokume IIRC. I've boosted the contrast to enhance the kan. The stone is actually a salmon color.

This is the only stone I have from our friend 330Mate. Not a bad stone, very fine, pretty soft and muddy, and pretty consistent so far but I doubt that will hold far into the stone. It's a slow cutter, just doesn't have a lot of grit in it. I use it to dress the face of stones after I've lapped them. Works great.

Cheers, Steve

Looks inbetweenish to me too, leaning on the kiita side of the house. Asagi, afaik are gray to light blueish while the Kiita can range from a brightish orange to lemon yellow like the stone I posted not too long ago. It's hard to tell the true colour from your pictures as your white balance looks WAY way off.

It's my understanding that Kan is a pattern that resembles tree rings, Mokume resembles the grain in wood planks. I've also seen, owned actually, a heavily swirled pattern and it was called Mokume also, but the word 'mokume' was followed by another qualifier that I forget at the moment.
Asagi and Kita can both have Kan.
I would have to work with it to have an opinion one way or another to be honest. It's a pretty stone regardless, and Im sure it'll treat you well.

Thanks for the responses, guys....Well I just honed a razor on it...Set the bevel on 1k C, then did Bot/Tenj/Mej/Koma/DMT Tomo. The slurry from the DMT credit card was whitish-greyish-green, which sort of resembles the slurry from my Tomae Asagi....SO I guess maybe we can classify this one as an "in-betweener".....Nevertheless it's a really nice stone to hone on...Pretty hard and very fine....

So did I!!

Do you have any photos of slurry from diamond plate?

(nice looking stone either way)

Sure!! It's a bad pic and like Jeremy (Brooksie) said my White balance is waay off, but here's some slurry on the stone....It tough to see but it's kinda greyish green in person...

Slurry from a Kiita stone will dry to an ivory like colour while the asagi stones I have dry to either a white or grayish colour, hope that helps. Much better pic this time JP :)

That's a funny little stone but I quite like this one my friend!

Interesting and good to know!! I agree it is a funny stone...It has a bit of an an identity crisis!

I call it junk, send my way for proper disposal.

Call it what you call it, it really does not matter, what matters is how it works.

Can you let the stone dry out, then take a pic of it with a small splash of water on the top.
don't wet the whole top, or use a lot of water, just put a small pool in the middle.
