Why no double-bladed DEs?

Hi all. I just plunged into the wonderful world of DE moving from a Fusion to a Merkur 38C. While I really like the 38C I must confess I miss the closeness of my multibladed Fusion. It got me wondering why no manufacturer has come up with a 2-bladed DE. Seeing how the blade on the 38C bends once inserted to achieve a proper shaving angle, it would seem to me to be a simple matter of designing a razor which allowed for the insertion of 2 blades - the top one bent more than the bottom one - in order to achieve a correct 2-bladed shaving angle. Has this ever been tried before in a non-disposable?
P.S. I think I'm entitled to a reasonable royalty if a manufacturer picks up this idea :wink2:

Thanks,
BGC

I picked up a Personna Double II for a buck at my local neighborhood drugstore - it's a DE with a plastic handle and disposable twin-blade cartridges. There's a plastic & metal case for the old & new cartridges - you basically slide the handle in one side to get rid of the old one, and then in the other side to clip on a new one.

I haven't tried it yet as the whole package looks to be at least 30 years old. Anybody ever stumbled across one of these? I can post pics if there's interest.

It was already thought of. I forgot who made it, but I will try and post photos later, once I find them..

I'm sure it was Schick, the Schick II blade or some such, with two cutting edges on each side of a DE blade. Can't seem to find a picture. Someone here at B&B had pictures and asked about them a month or so ago.

Lou, thanks for the pics. I wish we could get a better view of the blades and the razor, since I'm still having trouble envisioning the concept. Also, do you know if that razor pre-dates the Trac II, or if Personna was trying to capitalize on the Trac II's success?

Previous to this, wasn't there an Italian (?) DE that stacked multi de blades (proprietary) in a certain order with certain wedges or some such to achieve a multi-blade shave? I can't remember the name but it came in a really cool looking box... kind of an hexagonal cone shape.

schick use to make a DE blade called the 2002, it was 2 DE blades layered one on top of another and fit most TTO DE razors, i have 1 blade left,

There's a patent number on the package in the picture. I don't remember the site, but there's one out there and you can find out what date the patent was issued.

Why?
IMO multi blades are just a marketing gimmick that started with the Trac 2 and has led to 5 bladed cartridges that cost $3 a piece.
Most of us that have switch or returned to the DE have done so because we reject the notion that 2 blades shave better then 1 and if 2 are good 3, 4 and 5 are even better.
If you don't like the shave you get from your DE your more then welcome to return to shaving with $3 cartridges.

I think that was Gillette that had that.

No it was certainly Schick, I ran across a NOS L Type Injector, that was packaged with these blades. It was called the Schick II. It was literally two thin injector blades bonded together, so they could be injected as one unit. It was Schick's attempt at competing with the then new Trac II razor. :tongue_sm

It's hard to keep track of all the razor silliness from the early 1970's.
