Black Land Osprey SS (my opinion)

Beet her to it!
Welcome, and thank you for taking the time to read my opinion, I’m grateful.

Before We Get Started.

I want to take just a little bit of time to acknowledge BlackLand Razor’s hard work, dedication, and contribution. I personally think that it’s a beautiful thing when something new is introduced into our world. A new experience, a new memory, a new design, it’s truly something beautiful. Shane decided to not take the path of least resistance, and instead walk the road less travelled. The end result is a near masterpiece in design, function, aesthetics, and manufacturing. Thank you, Shane, and everyone at Blackland.

The Osprey has landed!

I can’t tell you how excited I was for this razor, I certainly don’t need it having reached the absolute peak in perfect shaving with the Ti Black-Bird, more on that in my Blac- Bird vs Henson write up. I just think its such a cool looking razor, and since the Black-bird converted me in to a loyal Black land fan, I knew that no matter the pictures, it would still be WAY better looking in person. With the current 25% sale I thought it would be the best time to jump in. I was not disappointed, what a beautiful creation to look at. I WAS however, disappointed there was no tool in the box to remove the brass insert, I don’t think I need to remind anyone this is expensive even with any discount.

IMG_1192.jpeg

She’s beautiful, but…

I feel safe in saying this, but hands down, this is the most beautiful razor ever introduced to the public, I mean this thing is just beautiful, art meets function in perfect harmony. You can tell the Black land crew would not be happy with JUST different. The design from a functional aspect does suffer just a bit; I’ll explain. There are a lot of areas which will be very difficult to clean, the head will allow a lot of soap scum, hair, and whatever else with-in its (body), I don’t know how to explain, I’ll just post a picture here.
IMG_1248.jpeg

Not a big deal just something I noticed while trying hard to keep it clean with a Q-tip, the Q-tip had a difficult time, so there are areas that are not accessible to the owner. The main concern people have is having to loosen before changing settings. I did not find this to be a problem at all. While I THOUGHT the machine finish would not bother me, it really does. Such a beautiful razor just feels unfinished in the machined state, it’s a little too raw… this is of course subjective. The polished finish is available for the low low low cost of one BILLION dollars [insert doctor evil pic here]. I kid, but the polished finish really adds a lot to the price on an ALREADY very expensive razor.

IMG_1185.jpeg

How does she shave?

Ok, look, when it comes to a stick that holds a razor you really do reach a point of diminishing returns. Unless were talking about the Ti Black Bird because that thing defies all laws of physics to me and is just magic.

This particular razor is hard to quantify, I mean, beyond personal things like technique, and skin, hair combinations, you also have to consider all the levels. First thing I noticed was the angle was way different than the Black bird, where the BB has a sort of flat cap and an edge that guides you to the perfect cutting angle much like the Henson, the Osprey sticks the rounded cap.

IMG_1240.jpeg

I personally did not like this but figured I’d get used to it. My first shave with it was ok, probably the best shave I had with it, and I was not able to re-create it; I’ll explain in a bit. I did not like how heavy it was, coming from the Ti Black Bird and Ti Henson, it is VERY noticeable. I figured I would get used to it, and after a few days, I did. If you read my Black Bird Vs Henson review, I talk about this spot that I have struggled with my whole life, sometimes it’s pink, other times red, painful, unsightly. The Black Bird has been the only razor I have ever used that got rid or did not aggravate the skin after shaving (VERY COOL).

IMG_1249.jpeg

The first shave was very close to BB like shave however that spot did come back, much to my dismay. I also started to notice over the next 24 hours that some of my stubble was more “stubbly” while other areas was still down to the skin. Very uneven grow back. Thought it might be in my head so I ignored it. The second and pretty much every shave after that first one have not gone well for me. To be fair, I was trying the extremes of the razor from mild to aggressive. 1-2-3 left me very irritated as level 1 really doesn’t do anything besides move cream, 2-3 are just a bit better but leave a lot behind. Even after a 3 pass WTG,XTG, ATG I had a lot of little stumps left that lean sideways and poke the skin and make it red. Levels 7-8-9 did much better in this regard however my skin felt VERY tight and very abused, I’ve used a lot of my PAA Aloe Vera juice this week! 6-5-4 are much better but still leave some straggler stumps behind, and that uneven grow back. That’s a thing! Lol I’ll post a picture where you can see stumps of different lengths.

IMG_1243.jpeg

Even on the “good” shaves, my skin still felt abused. Tonight I did my 3 passes and still felt prickles all over even after against the grain pass! Against my better judgement I did a 4thpass with my BB, and wouldn’t you know.. perfect, BBS+! But my skin was, IS, very hot right now. I think I’m done playing with the Osprey, maybe the polished finish would have been better? Idk, I was thinking about swapping it out for the titanium, maybe that would make a difference, however the Ti sold out. I hate to say this but I think the guy from Razor Emporium’s review is right, I think it might be the geometry of the blade? I don’t know what it is exactly, but my neck is done with the Osprey.

IMG_1241.jpeg

I really want to support such a great company so I think I will return the Osprey and re-purchase the Titanium version next year, maybe an Osprey Version 2 with a Black bird geometry?! That would be wonderful. For now, I think I’ll buy another Ti Black Bird, maybe the Open comb and long handle to have all versions on deck! Or maybe the Bronze Bird… Although there hasn’t been many reviews on the Bronze bird, especially from Ti bird owners. Have we been spoiled? Lol even my amazing Ti Henson sits there collecting dust!

Dull yet interesting
First of all, beautiful photography!
I'm sorry the Osprey didn't quite work out for you. Like you, I have tremendous respect for Shane at Blackland and I think that particular razor is drop dead gorgeous. It's out of my budget range but I'm glad you at least gave it a try and I thank you for the honest review.

Well, I guess I have to be the one to ask just what blade you were using. And if you say a Rockwell, I'm going to stare at you and it will be very awkward. I watched a lot of Clint Eastwood movies over and over for my stare, and I practice in a mirror. You'll get that same stare if it is Voskhods or Sharks.

You really don't want the stare.

I use my sharpest blades in inventory in my Osprey. American Personnas, the Chinese Suneko, and the Flydear. And I use my Osprey on "5".

I splurged for the polished stainless Osprey. With the understanding that it would be gauche to shave with a machine-finish razor on my chartered flight to Davos to give PowerPoint presentations on how to pull off "Managed Reality" in a convincing manner. It's all about sincerity.

I didn't do polished titanium because...I'm not Elon Musk.

For me, the Osprey embodies that difficult to grasp concept of "efficient mildness". Or rather, the razor is deceptively mild. Go into settings 6 or above, you might be in for a nasty surprise. But I adore mine.

I tried a Personna Med prep blade I have from 2016. Astra Platinum, and a Gillette 7 O clock black ninja. 2 shaves on Personna Mes prep as I noticed it’s smoother on 2-3 shaves. The right side of my neck looks like leather, it’s really bad.

@No1Up That's a terrific, honest and detailed review mate. I love the Blackbird in Ti and SS and belong to that minimal group that find the latter to be a touch smoother. I've said this to Shane before and will maintain it that the design of the BB remains one of the Finest creations by an Artisan Razor maker ever. Having said that, I'm a huge fan of the ERA and the Dart as well and am still awaiting the day patiently when a fellow shaver decides to let go of His ERA.

Adjustable Razor have never been my thing with the only three that I have liked among the 30 odd I've tried are the Merkur Progress, The HLS Elbrus and the Parker OC Variant. The Osprey with a futuristic design and the AC dedicated Vector are two razors that selective shavers love. The best part of Blackland is that Shane never forces or influences the use of his products. He has always emphasized that every razor might not be suited to every shaver and that's why there are a range of products to pick from. He has often mentioned that an affordable AS Machined or a more expensive highly polished razor will deliver the same shave quality and I have the highest respect for that.

The Osprey is a stunning razor to look at but one that I will stay away from, not because it isn't a great tool but just because I'm a three piece Razor fan for life.

Well, there goes that theory.

The Osprey is a three-piece razor. It just happens to be an adjustable three-piece razor.

It is important for you to know that I feel in no way smug pointing this out. My level of smugness is very low. Approaching zero.

That's true mate and well pointed out. I should rephrase that as being a three piece razor fan with a fixed level plate:)

Great detailed review. Liked your honesty and photography, well done.

You need to try a Wizamet in the Osprey on 4 imo. I have the polished version Ss. It will change your mind no doubt. Its more blade sensitive than my Blackbird Ti. Try it out and let me know how it feels then. Also some razors in my den I revisited and my opinion changed from my initial interpretation. Sometimes it some cases it just needs time and technique.

I’ll give it one more go with the Wizamet blade, but I’d hate to be locked in to certain blade. It should be good with any blade..

Do you only do trims, no full beard?

Iridian

Cool and slimy
Oh my, @AshleyC & @megamac, I also kinda wish the Osprey would be just THREE pieces, but nothing adjustable, nothing with a spring.

It looks like a Warp Core, that alone is amazing to boot. Aesthetics nailed perfectly. You see, I like reading pulp fiction, mostly scifi, this razor could power my Flash Gordon era spacecraft. :)

I am not getting along well with adjustables, there are several parts that i just don't like. Or even hate, the word isn't too strong in this case:

1.) SPRINGS. The idea alone that the baseplate is pressed upwards by a mere spring somehow doesn't find approval in my mind. I would probably remove most springs and put in extra hard springs that require both hands to move the dial...
I think Ashley did exactly this spring replacement thing, too, IIRC.

2.) RETENTION RINGS. I don't know if the Osprey has them. The Gibbs-design razors have them to prevent the inner part of the handle from falling out of it. They are not mandatory, they work without them as well, with a slight danger to screw the razor up so much that this part will be loose and fall out.

So guess what happened, I disassembled my Yaqi Ultima. Every part. Including, quite unnecessarily, the retention ring.
Try to put that ring back on... I wanted to avoid scratching my razor, I had no pliers ready that would have a soft touch surface on their jaws, so I pressed that in with my bare fingers. This took some time, maybe a bit less than 30 minutes, of worry, cursing and quite an intense workout for my finger strength...^^

3.) HARDER TO CLEAN. But only if you insist on cleaning every single part every single time, as I do... absolutely easy to do with 3 piece razors. Disassembling the mechanism on adjustable razors is not recommended, at least not every time, otherwise, see above... etc. etc..

4.) IT IS STILL THE SAME RAZOR. The characteristics of the razor itself don't change much just by adjusting the gap. Just like a Game Changer with different plates will change, but still remain a Game Changer and not become a Lupo or another razor head.

5.) PRICE. The extra paid for stainless steel adjustables is serious. The Futur clones are at least super cheap, but I would rather get another plate or a whole other razor than pay that extra.

So this really isn't my razor season this year. The Yaqi Avanti (Progress clone) and Torqx (Elbrus clone) are amazing to look at. But I would feel the same as for the Yaqi Ultima. I even like to shave with it, it is my favorite among the Gibbs clones so far, but the whole thing still doesn't work out for me. The other thing this year was that the new releases were overwhelmingly on the mild side, not my personal preference.

I got the Rex Envoy, saved some money compared to the Ambassador, but it is perhaps really a non-adjustable version of the latter set to level "3", I didn't like the way it shaves much, while I like my Yaqi Ultima, another Gibbs-inspired razor, a lot more.

@Iridian, well said mate. I think all things said and done, I'm just not a fan of adjustables. I have friends that only use Adjustable razors but its just a matter of personal preference. I will always admire the engineering and the craft that goes into each adjustable whether it be the Gibbs, the Rocnel Sailor, the Elbrus, the Torqx, the Muramasa or for that matter the Osprey.

The issue is that I sold off all my adjustable razors and that's cause I prefer a fixed plate or level. I have an OCD issue with cleaning, drying and keeping my razors looking like new. I find that very cumbersome with an adjustable Razor.

As for the Ambassador, the Konsul or even the Envoy, I'm not a fan after having tried them out but I have mates who call them the holy grail of shaving tools.

Had my first shave with my Ti Bird since I got the Osprey, perfect, no irritation, the little red spots I had from the Osprey are still there but they are fading pinkish now. Just a wonderful shave. I think I’ll be sticking to the Bird for a while, I went ahead and ordered Bronzd Bird, based on users here on the forum. I might get a SS bird to have the trio. I can’t wait to see what Shane cooked up in the workshop next.

My bronze Bird is slightly more aggressive, than my other machined Birds. Maybe due to polishing process.
