What's new

What have I got here?

I stopped in the local antique mall today and walked out with three razors for $12. I think I came away with a Gillette New Bar type (open comb), a Gillette Flair Tip and a Gem Micromatic. The Gem still has a genuine single edge Gem Blade in it. These are going to need some serious cleanup—I've got them scheduled for an ultrasonic bath in the next day or two and then gonna work the scrubbing bubbles and some Maas.

Any other tips for cleaning these? I know they're not show pieces by any stretch, but they are in good usable condition, just lots of soap scum. All the combs on the New are straight too! Thanks for any advice.

Try using plain white toothpaste on the Gem and the Flair tip. Gently rub it into the razors with your fingers, and rinse with hot water. Repeat this process several times and you might be surprised with the results. Good luck and good find too.

You did well. The most well-rounded micromatic, arguably gillette's best razor design, and a super speed on top of it.

Thanks for the tips everyone. So the flair tip is actually a Super Speed? As soon as I clean the gunk off of these I'll be able to read the date codes (if they're there). Though I'll need help there too. Not exactly sure how to decipher them. Thanks again!
