VDH Deluxe

I was at walmart this week and I saw one of the VDH kits for 6 bucks. I had read a few posts about people saying that VDH was an amazing soap for the price and I figured that unless the brush was an actual Q-tip I couldn't go to far wrong with the set.

Boy was I wrong. The VDH soap isn't bad... It's horrible. I can see getting this soap instead of some canned goo in a pinch, but that's about it. Oddly it's the scent that's the main turn off and this is coming from someone who actually likes Arko and Tabac.

YMMV

I find VDH Delux to be a great soap for the money. I get a slick cream with good cushion. If the scent is the problem, you can melt it in the microwave and add some aftershave or EO to get the smell of your choice.

I get acceptable performance out of VDH deluxe.

If you got the kit (soap/bowl/brush) it should have come with VDH deluxe (sort of a pasty fleshy color).

Put my .02 in on VDH Deluxe being decent soap. I like the scent and the performance. I do prefer the Luxury soap over the Deluxe. The Luxury soap is excellent!

And that's why its good to try for yourself, since I get really good lather and shaves using the VDH soap, where I struggled with the Williams soap.

just used it today and it was as good as my $30 cream I've been using. I'll know for sure tomorrow. My day after seems to be the true test for me

I always keep a puck on hand. Simple to lather, and inexpensive. It was my go to soap until I realized that saving my Mama Bear for special occasions was silly as at my age. Everyday I am on the green side of the sod is a special occasion.

That's an awesome attitude no matter what your age is. It puts into words my reason for ordering some mdc now rather than waiting til later. I had to copy it into my signature. Unfortunately it doesn't give me enoigh room to give you credit.

Another enabling success.

I like the Van der Hagen Deluxe quite a lot. It sets a benchmark for slickness and cushion in my opinion. The scent is a faint rose as far as I can tell and it leaves my face feeling soft and smooth. It also leaves my brush free of soap residue that I find with other products. For the money it's tough to beat. I still have to try the luxury soap.

I agree--it sets the benchmark. If I have to pay more for a soap than vdh, it's lather better be at least as good. I don't mind of the lather is harder to achieve, it better be good though.

VDH is nice. I like Deluxe and the Luxury. I dont know if the Luxury is twice as good at a bit over twice the price but I do like it.

VDH is available over the counter most everywhere I've been, and it works. It's not going to compare to really good soaps like Tabac, but it does its job and is still clinging to counter space at CVS in a time when it can't possibly have a big market share of even the small audience for wetshaving goods (since we pretty much ALL buy online these days). It gets credit for that.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone call it horrible before. It's in the same performance ballpark as pretty much all other melt and pours. Maybe not quite as good, but reasonably close.

Yes the scent isn't fantastic (grapefruit/citronella as I recall).

As others have said, replace the brush with something that isn't crap before you judge the soap.

I too find VDH deluxe to be a great value. I use it as a base soap for uberlather and it does a great job in that respect. Plenty slick, which is what I want out of a soap in uberlather as I use the cream to provide cushion.

Exactly what I do with it. I'd be able to use it by itself if I had to--but I prefer to mix it. Excellent value, IMO. And the scent is fine IMO.
