9 / 10 (face) 9 / 10 (head) Concluding Tabactober, 2024 edition, with 41 shaves on this old puck over the course of the month between face and head. I bought the puck in mid 2021. I'm not sure if it's the tallow formula or the 2021 veggie version. I reckon I'd used about half the puck before the start of this month, though that's a rough guess at best. I broke through the bottom of the puck a few days back. After mashing the soap back down to a consistent layer (it's quite hydrated at this stage), I guess there could be close to another month left in the thing. What did I learn? Tabac is great! I could easily be happy with Tabac as my only soap. Getting its best lather requires a little more water than I was using for it, before this month, but once you get it right it's as rich and slick as anything. And I love the peppery, powdery barbershop scent — though it's quite tame, by now, in the lifecycle of this puck. I'll look forward to breaking out a fresh puck and trying the 2024 formula once this one's done. (On that topic: I'd guess this puck is probably the 2021 veggie formula, but I'm not too concerned about tallow versus veggie in any case. There are some truly great veggie soaps out there, and I trust the Tabac master awk_m4, among others, that Tabac pulled off the transition.) I started on breaking in two new boar brushes this month — a Semogue Asylum from Bullgoose Shaving and an Omega Jade from Connaught. No matter what, it's just an uphill battle for the first 10-15 shaves, until the brush starts to open up a bit. And of course it's still a ways to go from there before the brush truly comes into its own. Through rotating brushes against the one soap over the month, I've reassessed my earlier view of the Semogue C7 boar knot. It nicely complements the SOC. Just different enough to be interesting. The "half-hive" Asylum looks great, but the Pegasus handle works better. Hoping Semogue eventually comes out with a black resin, silver ring version. Even fully dialed in with a soap, I'll pay the price for rushing a lather. Mornings are a bit chaotic these days with our kids, but it's always going to be worth the extra 1–2 minutes to get the lather just right. Coincidentally, I also ended up using only one blade this month, the Indian Wilkie ("Saloon Pack"). Also great! Over five weeks with one soap and one blade, I got a great comparison between the various razors used. Winner: Edwin Jagger 3ONE6. I'll need a sight longer to truly run a full bracket (my razor drawer overfloweth), but I've been impressed by the degree to which the 3ONE6 consistently pulls ahead of the competition. Finally: This was fun, and offered good perspective. I don't have the appetite to 3017 anything, but I'll definitely try a few more one-month commitments. |
