Bowl Lathering: Boy, did I have it wrong!

@Goblin , Barrister and Mann brought back unscented for their latest base. Soap did Ariana and Evans. But you have your Wickhams with kaolin clay and big dreams and D.R. Harris “natural” and very lightly scented Cyril R. Salter hard soap in your propinquity.

Well, I flatter myself that I may have been a small influence on that. I am guessing it was spring this year I exchanged a few messages with Will on another website on the subject of unscented soaps, and said that it could be imagination but I thought I was seeing an uptick of interest in them. I see the "veggiebus" base launched in the summer this year.

...I also note that it is sold out on the B&M website.

RIP Andre Braugher.

In that case I have the perfect shaving bowl for you:

It may be metric (get used to it, the rest of the world has already), but it’s probiotic, which must be good for the skin….
Also available in other flavours, like lemon (for summer shaving, I presume). :001_cool:

Seriously, I have a suitable mug and bowl, so I might give it a try tomorrow when I shave with a shaving cream for a change. As I have no issues with my skin, I’d be surprised if the change will be permanent, but you never know…

Way too deep!

I tried that soap again today that gives me a little sting when I'm using it. The difference is I used my straight razor, which I've not been able to use for a while because of the injury to my hand. I got no sting whatsoever. So that leaves me, wondering if it might be those little thin blades that go in safety razors that shave so closely on one or two passes whereas a straight razor takes three to get me where I want to be. The straight razor is definitely a softer shaving razor.

Update.

To my surprise, I liked bowl lathering more than I expected and have been using a lathering bowl for the last few days. Up until then, they were merely receptacles for shaving soap to me.

For more than 20 years I have been face lathering, but I enjoy spending that extra time to whip up a yogurt-like lather in a bowl.
At this stage, I cannot say whether it is the attraction of doing something differently or whether this is something that I shall keep doing for long…

As far as my skin is concerned, I still have to notice a difference.

Captains choice (ceramic and copper) are great bowls. At the moment I slightly prefer the ceramic. I have always bowl lathered, but often times finish up by lathering a bit in the face for entertainment purposes. Then again, the whole thing is largely for entertainment purposes

I learned a new word here on the forum!

Who would’ve thought?

I like a scuttle and use the PAA offering.

When it breaks, I may go for the Captain’s Choice copper bowl. I like that one a lot, too.

In my bowl I usually use the PAA CK-6 unscented. It raises a great and stable lather. Currently using a scented Mike’s Naturals, which is a great soap as well, although the lather doesn’t hold up as long and I need to reapply on my head a few times, so this is a little less optimal.

I used to only use my bowl but over the years I've discovered the joy of face lathering. But my face cannot handle that everyday, so I use both my bowl and on other days I face lather if I use Williams or MWF. Here is my faithful bowl I've had 13 years or so:

I was inspired many years ago from a member "wknicholas" to mimic his kit - and I got the same bowl as he had, it looks so nice, here are a few of his SOTD pics from circa 2012:

I prefer a meringue frosting consistency (no bubbles) that sticks to the brush, spreads easily, and provides a slick & smooth lather (Stirling). Shaving bowl is .50 cent plastic salad bowl that I found at a thrift shop. I serrated the bowl bottom.

I mostly do face lathering but has anyone tried using one of the foldable silicone items shone below. My wife uses one of these to clean her makeup brushes. The inside diameter at the top is about 4.5 inches and the bottom inside diameter is about 3.5 inches.

Need some input from experienced bowl users.

I've been using a PAA Intergalactic Travel Scuttle just about exclusively. Before that I used for a brief minute a collapsible silicone travel dealio I scored from Stirling.

Y'all post these gorgeous neat pictures of creamy lather only on the bristles of your brushes. (I get staging glamour shots, been there done that for a number of things over the years!)

That said, the scuttle seems to force the lather over the sides and up the handle of my brushes.

Recently Captain's Choice posted about a cobalt blue bowl and noted the design of the bowl keeps (forces?) the lather to stay in the bowl. My recollection and impression reading the description is/was, "Now that would be a feat! Does that really work? No more mess up the handle and all the lather stays in the bowl?"

So that's the question...

Does the Captain's Choice design keep the lather in the bowl and minimize/eliminate lather creep up the handle?

Are there any such lather bowls/scuttles that realistically do this?

Am I missing some subtle brush technique in generating lather that would mitigate this?

Based upon the experiences I've had thus far and the mechanics involved in creating a bowl lather, I'm prepared to continue to operate like a 7 year old overflowing the washing machine with too much soap!

What say the experienced among you?

These look a lot like the portable water bowls we have to take along on hikes for our dog to get a drink. Without the course bottom though.

Lathering is the funniest thing. It’s really difficult and the slightest adjustment will leave you with a brush that doesn’t have anything in it, or some white coloured water. And then one day you just get it and from then on it seems like it’s nearly impossible to get anything other than perfect lather in a flash, and there’s nothing you can do to mess it up. And none of us knows how we’re doing it or what we’re doing differently - it’s like breathing.

So I don’t know. Maybe load more soap. I could tell you in detail what I do but until you have the knack for it it won’t work when you do it the same.

Hi, mentioned is the post above, I've used this one:

It works well enough. The large nubs in the bottom are interesting. These are pretty gentle on the bristles though I'm not sure the design is necessarily the best for creating lather: though it does this well enough for sure. Because it collapses and weighs next to nothing it is quite ideal for throwing in a bag, lightening and decluttering travel, camping or going to the gym.

It's not the lather quality I'm all that concerned about. I got that down for the brands of soaps I'm using.

It's the lather creep and overflowing the bowl I'm really curious about.

Some bowls have a lip that curves inward toward the center of the bowl. My CaYuen has that design. They aren’t cheap but they are wonderful, for me, at least.
