The Great Southern Land (a.k.a. GSL) is a place that exists in the south, far far far south! In Australia to be precise! It's origins are from a man named Tom (TSWebster). Tom created a spot for Australians to discuss anything (wetshaving related or not). Later on, Marcus (mdunn) declared the Great Southern Land his own. As we move ahead, I want the precious information about the Great Southern Land Social Group to be preserved so this thread will collect and help Australian finding what they need on the forum (Non-Australians are welcomed, of course)!

First, everything that you need to know about Australia, is in Wiki under this link: http://wiki.badgerandblade.com/Australia

It contains everything you need from wetshaving supplies, local shops addresses, list of locally made products, etc.

If you are looking for some information about the locally made Palmolive Shave Stick (previously known as Mennen), I would suggest you have a look at this thread: http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/114065-Palmolive-shave-stick-vs-Mennen-shave-stick-(Oz)

You could be looking for some Cigar advices : http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/189087-Importing-cigars-to-Australia

or maybe about Australian Whiskey? http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/127134-Australian-Whisky

I would invite anyone else to subscribe and post about the Great Southern Land in this thread if they like.

Pending the wiki page to be updated, here's a list of products that we could add to the Maintenance page in wiki - http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/364287-Australia-Razor-cleaning-products if someone has the answer, please post

While on the subject, there seems to be only 1 company that manufactures blades in Australia in the medical industry. They may or may not be appropriate for an injector or Single edge razor, any info appreciated : http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/204715-Oz-injector-shavers

The Australian replater list - I need a confirmation to add them in wiki : http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/364289-Australian-replaters

A DIY Scuttle with a tutorial posted from an Australian site? http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/290850-DIY-Scuttle

G'day

I'm new to DE shaving and the forum. I have a few questions:

does anyone know of a good place to buy gillette safety razors near ACT or Sunshine Coast/Brisbane?

Are places for razors inflated here compared to say, the US?

As a general rule, does Australia have more British Gillettes than American ones?

Cheers

Yes, Australia is a good place to find brit razors in the wild, probably more so than the US models. There are a couple of antique store in Canberra where I have found nice razors, but like anywhere, it is being in the right place at the right time (and being persistent). You are up against at least a couple of serious collectors in the ACT.

Razors in antique stores here tend to be priced on the high side, but that's not to say bargains cant be had, and the dealers do screw up from time to time. Most things you find will be priced at five times what they are worth. But every now and then...

Do you know of any in Canberra that would be willing to sell a razor or two; or at least show off their collection to a newbie?

Well, I cant speak for anyone, but there have been a couple of Canberra meets organised over the last couple of years. The guys met at one of the members houses, checked out his collection, and had BBQ. I was a bit jealous I couldn't attend.

Watch this space. I'm sure if another meet is in the works they will post it here.

We have had three meets. Two at Tilleys in Lyneham and one at my place to look at my stash and chew the fat. Must be time to organise another now it is mentioned ...

If anybody is keen for a catch up post in this thread or PM me. Happy to host again or have it at Tilleys with the usual show and tell and the FAMOUS CCU (Canberra Catch Up) Lucky Dip! The CCU Lucky Dip is seriously awesome IMHO.

Well I'm in Indonesia for the week and I found this at the 7/11 equivalent for 4500 rupiah which is under 40 cents AUD.

It looks really nasty but I have to try it once? Looking at it now the blade is in a bow shape along the safety bar.

Gaa! Looks a bit like this one I found in an asian grocer a couple of years back. Give it a shot. What do you have to lose but your moles?
