Single Edge Razor Acquisition Thread.

Purchased a lot on the 'bay last week. I happily discovered a NOS Canadian Type E in the lot! Instructions, full blade key, and the razor still has the blank! My daily driver is a US Type E. This Canadian version will be placed in my collection and will replace a Canadian Type E set I already have but is not NOS.

Found this nos Gem Minute Man in the wild. It was a promotional item from the Brooks Clothing Company in Los Angeles. Brooks Clothing was a successful men's store in SoCal through the 30s and until 1945 when it was sued by Brooks Brothers and shut down. I haven't had a chance to take it apart and look at it or use it.

Schick Type E1

What is interesting about this razor is I can date this almost certainly to December of 1935 or January of 1936. Zain was a publishing group and they would for a couple of years until 1935 run a contest each year for people to submit ads for products. The best submissions would win prizes like that razor there. The last contest they ran was in 1935 with the last submissions in December then they would announce the winners in early January. That razor I know for sure was first introduced in December of 1935 as seen in this ad here.

That makes that razor in the first or no later than second production run of all Type E razors.

So cool!!!

I was browsing for vintage brushes when a small lot came up with a NOS soap, Rubberset brush, Old Spice mug and this beauty. Couldn’t say no for $25.

That is a great price for that razor. That razor is also a really great shaver once you figure out how to dial in the angle and get the right blade for it. I found I couldn't get a BBS shave out of it until I started using Personna injector blades in that razor. Maybe you'll have better luck with the standard Chinese Schicks but if you don't try a Personna blade then.

First SE Razor! Gem Micromatic OC. Happened upon it in a junk shop in Deer Park. No price on it and rubber banded to the tuck of (vintage?) blades pictured. Offered 3 bucks. Scored!

Good score. Those gem razors are still the 2nd best kept secret in wet shaving after Schick injectors. As long as you keep away from ones that look like they are collectable, bargains are to be found in the junk shops still.

Well, my RAD has been rampant this last month! Into Injectors this month. It all started with the M, then a post "72 L1, a G8 and the latest which was filthy, but cleaned up good another M. Not included is a gold and black post "72 L1 that's in the mail. Only the G8 was over $15.00.

I just added this Gem 1912 travel set to my pile. The box and razor are in nice condition but I think it is missing a blade case. If I read RonR's chart correctly these with the chain link handle were introduced in 1927. I chickened out on using my MMOC for my first Gem blade shave, so this will be the one.
