Mitchells Wool Fat Shaving Soap is no longer Tallow based

I smell like a Christmas pudding
I live semi arid, so I am not concerned with needing to dry out the puck given it’s ill fitting lid.
I agree the dish is poor, I often see lids with the transfer off centre. I had always thought that the lids were intentionally loose to allow the soap to dry between uses. Shulton Old Spice, Tabac, Yardley, Goya, Imperial Leather... all my soaps in their original mugs or bowls have loose fitting lids. I wonder if tighter fitting, even air tight lids, have come about as a result of soaps now often being purchased by post, or by the modern habit of using one soap less frequently, as part of a large rotation of soaps.

Mine lid actually rocks.
The dish opening is off-round and the lid is concaved, almost looking like a saddle when viewed straight on.

True - my Tabac dish is loose, but at least it is stackable to an extent.

Price makes more sense with the ceramic dish from an airport specialty store. Glad you were able to land at least one tallow MWF puck to experience it. It's my favorite shaving soap.

Are there local Turkish shaving soaps that you also like to use?
Exactly that is my third MWF soap in last 15 years, sad to see they changed their formula to veggie based. Only DR Harris left with tallow formula.
I like to use Derby, Arko and More for you shaving soaps in my rotation.

If you can get it Cyril R. Salter hard shaving soap pucks are another tallow based alternative. Exact same base as most D.R. Harris pucks, nice aroma and half the cost. 4.5 British Pounds from Connaught Shaving. I use it as well as D.R. Harris Windsor and enjoy both (note Windsor is one of the two D.R. Harris soaps with a slightly different base). Of course MWF tallow formula is still my favorite overall soap.

What do you find significant between the Harris Soap bases - really, would you consider one an improvement over the other ?

I can say that regarding the base differences in T&H for example, the Apsley performs a smidge better than my Sandalwood or 1805. Other than frag, I wouldn’t say that I would purchase one more over the other; Floris reformulation was night and day for me. The previous was just flat - literally

FWIW - I won’t be switching from my Marlborough, unless of course a new formulation is all that is available.

Hi CrisWilson, See my original review and comparison via the link below. During my initial use the D.R. Harris Windsor (DRH) lather, while good, was not as rich and slick as my best soaps including Cyril R. Salter (CRS). Eventually I was able to dial it in and get it up to a similar level as my CRS. The issue is that my puck takes more effort to load than the tallow first CRS soap. With more loading time one can pull off enough product for a similar great lather.

Note that the DRH delivered better scent performance that the CRS. My overall conclusion was that CRS, at half the price, was a better value for soap performance with DRH worth it if you preferred its scent.

Per the DRH web site Sandalwood is the other hard puck with the Potassium Palmate first base used in my Windsor. Your Marlborough uses the same tallow first base found in the Cyril R. Salter soap pucks.

Much appreciated- I’m on the road today but look forward to the details when I break.

MWF bath soaps I’ve found to be really good, though they always seem to go much quicker than anticipated.

I’m working through an economical duo of Pears and Dove 3-in-1 which has been surprisingly long lasting. Perhaps that perception is tied to the respective bar’s starting size
Dove 3-in-1 is wonderful. It is the best soap that I have ever purchased locally and I learned about it on this forum. I would agree that it is a very dense and long-lasting soap.

It would interesting to know which soap base I do have. I suspect that I have the Palmate First formula.
Mine have since been grated into an exhausted DRH Marlborogh Cream tub, but both pucks were bought in London almost 2y ago; so who knows what's in there. I have a couple spares packed away that I'll get into, one of these days - FWIW - works marvelously.

Both bases work well, they just need to be dialed in differently.
