This is an odd question, but hey.... what the heck. I'm curious to know how many times YOU rinse your DE razor while shaving. For the sake of everyone giving answers that are comparable,PLEASE FOLLOW THESE GUIDELINES for your response:

Number of rinse times = # of times you rinse your razor under water per pass AND per side of your face/neck. For example, if you shave the entire right side of your face and neck and during that time you use each side of your razor only once, the correct answer to this poll should be 0. Or if, for example, you shave the right side of your face with both sides, rinse, and then shave the right side of your neck with both sides, the correct answer would be 1. Etc. etc.

Please feel free to expand on your answer below , and apologies if this is an overly complicated question.

I have no idea. I just rinse it when both sides fill up with lather. I really don't think about it much.

I'm not entirely sure. I rinse every three to four strokes. As a head shaver, I take a few strokes more than some, therefore I rinse more times per shave.

Same as Foyle here-- I've never counted, and I guess it would vary depending on how thickly I applied the lather for a given pass.

I voted 4. That is about average for me. I rinse once for my neck, once for each cheek and once for my chin. Of course it depends on the razor. The above is my rinse pattern for my Senator, which holds a ton of lather. Now, for a TECH, double or triple the estimate. Not sure what it is about the TECH, but they need to be rinsed a lot.

I guess around five rinses per side per pass. I like a wet razor. I'll even rinse the whole thing if only one side is full of cream and the other side is clean but dry. I don't know if this makes any difference but they do call it wet shaving. Maybe I'm doing it too much. I have no idea as I'm still trying to perfect my technique. Textbook Newbie Nervosa?

I initially voted 10+ because I looked a the title of the thread and not the question of the poll--which are two different things. My mistake, but also confusing construction. Also not sure what "side of face/neck" means. Is that face + neck of each side? Of do you mean the average of the face + the neck on each side?

(Don't mind me, I was a research professional for many years and I'm pretty picky about this stuff).

But as many have pointed out, I simply rinse when "it's time". Probably 3-4 per side (face + neck) per pass.

Frankly, I can't grasp what the question is getting at exactly. I take longish passes, around 5 on one side of my face, and around the same for my neck on that side. Then around 4-5ish under that side of the nose and 4-5ish on that side of the chin.

I typically rinse after every 1-3 passes, depending on how lazy I am.

I rinse when needed ... there are so many variables that influence it, like the soap you use.

I wonder if this poll is going to produce meaningful results?

No clue. Once my razor is full of lather, I rinse.

...and I try not to waste the hot water by leaving it running during shave 'strokes' / passes.

I use a shaving bowl for that purpose. At the beginning of my shave, I fill it with hot water, and let my brush soak for a minute. Afterwards, I use the same water to rinse my razor. No running water needed.

I shave my right cheek first, then the right side of my neck. Then the left cheek and the left side of my neck. Then below my mouth, down over my chin and down the center of my neck. Then the mustache area. I repeat this for XTG and ATG passes. I never vary. Never. I tried a different order one time and had to call into work sick. It was awful.

Therefore, I am uniquely qualified to answer this question. I can usually shave my right cheek sufficiently using both sides of my DE without rinsing, going WTG (N to S for me). Then I rinse. My neck on each side will usually take 2 rinses. I tend to keep my razor slightly cleaner on my neck passes since this is where I get irritation the easiest.

The biggest variable is how well I make my lather and how thick and creamy it is. I also like a wet razor, so if the cream builds up heavily on the razor I rinse more often. Using something like Proraso or Cyril Salter creme I might rinse as often as twice on my cheeks and 4 times each side of my neck. If I am in a hurry and use Cremo Creme I may get by with 1 rinse on my cheeks and 1 rinse each side of my neck. So.....

I am going to go with 4 rinses per side. I just sat here with my hand and simulated my usually passes on my cheek and neck. It's errie how conditioned I am to do it exactly the same way, every time. I really need professional help I think.

Also, I don't know if this means I comprehend things easily, or am as nut ball crazy as the OP, but I understood the directions for the poll perfectly after only one time through. I actually knew what he wanted from the title of the poll.

Thanks to all for your responses so far, and apologies for an arguably unclear question/poll. I guess the real issue I was trying to get at was how often people tend to rinse their razors vs let lather accumulate. Just curious.

Extra thanks to Jeff_H - I appreciate your detailed response... this is exactly what I was looking for. I also follow the exact same pattern each time I shave, so I guess that's why I thought it wasn't as crazy a question as some seem to think.
I must say that I think the original post was clear enough (seeing as how I wrote it <smile>), but it's perfectly possible that I am nut ball crazy instead!!!
Glad to see I'm not the only one, if that's the case!!!
