Without knowing a number I can definitely say I’ve spent much more on wetshaving gear over the years than I ever thought I would. I don’t do backups though (never seen the point), and I’m at a point where I’m trying my best not to buy anything else without at least having sold off a commensurate amount of stuff, so I’d like to think I won’t be spending much “new” money for a while moving forward.

Haha and how much do our good ladies spend on cosmetics, hairdressers, perfumes, nail bars, handbags, shoes, clothes, beauty salons, health spas, botox, hair-removal treatment, diets, sunbeds, plastic surgery etc ? - I`m sure they use their own payment cards at all times - God Bless `Em - haha !
Totally agree but they do it for us…. At least that’s what they say LOL

Since I landed on this site a month ago I`ve bought quite a few razors (13 in one day) loads of shaving soaps, whipped soaps, shaving butter, mirrors, brushes, frags , attars, essential oils, 80 bars of good soap, Menthol, Grinders, an 1850 antique Indian brass pan, bowls, essential oil boxes, razor stands, razor racks, shaving bags, 8 vintage travel razor / grooming kits, two vintage 1960`s battery travel razors, 10 litres of Castile soap and about a 1000 blades.

I think it`s well over a grand in 4 1/2 weeks; before that a couple of hundred (used mostly s/h antique carbon straights) in 45 years - before October 2024 the most I ever spent on any razor was £25 that lasted me decades.
It`s even worse than that - it`s a couple of grand in a month - saw the bank app and my phone nearly melted - nevermind put the air-brakes on now, dropped the big anchor and used a parachute first haha ! Well worth it though - I`m giving some razors away this weekend to the needy !

Haha and they say that they do it all just for US - Sure Baby - haha !

I would leave it at “a lot”. It should probably never be added up.

I still like to look for lightly used cheap razors at garage/estate sales antique stores/markets and flea markets.

I used a Vintage Futura last night that I bought at a flea market for $5. It is in mint condition, but does not have a box.

I know that I do go on and on about the valuation/price point of common razors. But there is no reason to pay very much for any of the common razors. If you are already out there on the hunt… on a long enough time frame… you can find all of the common razors/other gear for very little in lightly used/NOS condition for very little. The majority for one’s collecting budget should be for the uncommon items.

I have spent from 250 to 500 dollars and thought this was going to be cheaper than cartridge razors. I have slowed down and don't really buy much other than soap and blades now.
Hi John, I see you're about to hit your one year B&B anniversary!

While I came over to DE from electric for cartridge shavers the savings can really come starting the second year if you just purchase needed blades and soap and don't fall into any rabbit holes. During the first year you have to cover investments in your equipment. After that all you need is a 100 pack of blades every year or two and perhaps 3-4 replacement soaps.

Sounds like you are happy with your equipment. What did you settle on for razors and brushes? Do you have a favorite blade and soap?

Invested? Ha ha ha hahaha!

"Voting"? Confessing. I'm taking the 5th.

I will say, at the price of Williams Mug and generic/store brand Personna DE blades, even inheriting a free ball end Old Type didn't keep my wet shaving costs under $500 in the nearly 50 pragmatic/cheapskate years from the late 1960s to the late 2010s retiree/hobbyist phase.

I NEVER PAID FOR IT (a cartridge) IN MY LIFE!

And if I adjusted for inflation?!? My first 2018 hobbyist $1 was the same as my 1968 high school 14¢ or my 1983 tech geek 39¢.

So I get to dial my hobbyist spending back by a factor of 7. Whoops, doesn't help much...

For me, DE blades are the cheapest they have ever been. Thank you internet and exchange rates.

Straight razors? Straight razors may have gone up a little since their heyday. Can't buy them on Main Street any more. But, not even English lords bought them in the dozens back then.
