2025 Shave Purchase Sabbatical - The Battlestar Galactica Year

Right. I am in - I just ordered two more razors in the last 24hrs and that really does have to be it for a while! (Didn't I say that last month?)

I allowed myself another splurge because I am having a bad time at the moment with foot injuries and restricted mobility so trying razors I am curious about is something I can look forward to, but with 6 razors added in the past couple of months it is time to take my foot off the gas. I expect some of them won't arrive until Q1 2025, so that is good. I am also going to give myself an exception as there is one more razor I am quite curious about...maybe that can be a birthday treat at the halfway point of the year, although hopefully by then I will be in a better place physically and therefore have other things to spend my money on!

I'm trying to pre-order this month, which isn't, I think, a disqualifying event. But, if I can't do this, surely the fine organizers won't force me to lose my very sanity waiting until 2026.

Thank you. I busted the ligaments in both big toes a couple of months ago and I have now damaged the ligaments in several locations on the outside aspects of both feet from walking on the sides of my feet to protect the big toes. You can't make this stuff up. I imagine it's going to take a few months to get pain free, and several more to get back to normal walking. At least I have B&B to keep me sane whilst I am stuck in the house!

I am finding it quite difficult not to Treewhale before the deadline.

I am expecting 2 soaps because my tubs are getting low and I don't want to run out of Signature Soaps during 2025 (like I don't have a 10 year stash of other soaps and creams I could use instead); and 3 razors because of RAD; and I keep thinking I might like to finally pick up a Semogue SOC or a an unbleached Zenith before the shutters come down for 2025. I must resist! I don't need them!

I feel like a smoker who knows he is about to get on a long flight and spends 20 minutes standing outside the airport and chain smoking half a packet in the hope that will allow them to go the distance!

Totally understandable Jim @Goblin. I have that feeling sometimes as well. There are two approaches. One is to just give in and do it. The other is to stop looking, to clear your wish lists and start rethinking them during the restraint. The longer I was in the more I came to realise what I really wanted and what was more a spur of the moment kind of thing.

But again I totally get the feeling of stocking up these few weeks.

I think a lot of it is just spur of the moment - giving in to the urge to buy for a brief neuro-chemical reward. I mean, lets face it - most of us have more stuff than we rationally need. It's the definition of "retail therapy".

Our lizard brains are hard-wired to reward us with a dopamine hit when we acquire whatever resources we consider valuable, especially if we are anticipating a period of scarcity. It just so happens that us weirdos over-value shaving gear compared to society at large, and apparently it doesn't make a difference if the upcoming scarcity is in the form of a self-imposed restraint.

But the fact that I know what is going on in my brain doesn't stop it from happening! I like to think I am sophisticated and strong-willed, but in reality I am just a simple animal. But thanks to my obsession I am not a hairy animal!

My own deal went thusly:

1 - Buy stuff because others really like said stuff. Whatever that stuff is.

2 - Figure out what works well for someone else doesn't work well for me.

3 - Goto line one.

In the meantime, stuff kind of piles up.

So, the epiphany was to join a restraint and just concentrate on what is here and how to make each thing work best for me.

That was 2013 and we used to have Quarterly Restraints and I joined the 4th Quarter one, which ended at Christmas. I had bought a couple Slant razors last and they seemed to offer me the best shave. So, I stuck with those. And the answer was Yes! The Fasan Double Slant was the one which worked the best.

That saw me do a hard look at my stock to be sure the consumables would last for all of 2014 and then join the Year Long Restraint. I also set an exception for another Fasan as a backup and away I went.

During that first year-long I took a hard look at all these things around here and began the process of listing them, one by one, on the BST. Pass them on.
