Barbershop Shave

Anybody get an actual barbershop shave recently? I'm curious if they still (1) give them and (2) use a straight. I would try it once for the experience, never having had a face shave in a barbershop.

And if (1) and (2) are affirmative, what kind of treatment would you expect and for how much?

I imagine it's a bit of a splurge?

thanks,
jim

I haven't done it recently. But my barbershop does give straight razor shaves. I get two or three a year. At my barbershop it's $12 dollars for preshave, hot towel treatment, hot cream made on-site, straight razor shave, massage and aftershave splash.

I recently called into a barber shop in Indiana to ask what their process was and what the cost was. The conversation started off great...

"We start with a nice hot towel."
"We use a brush and soap and generate lots of warm lather."

Then it just went totally South:

"We shave with the grain (down) with a Shavette, real straight razor, and then clean up and go against the grain with a Gillette Fusion."

I said, a Shavette isn't a real straight razor to which he responded, "Its the same thing." I then asked why in the world I'd pay $50 for a straight razor shave if they weren't going to use a real straight and in the end I was just getting a crappy cartridge shave to which he said, "I don't know but a ton of people do, do you want me to schedule you an appointment?"

No thanks!

Yes, the baber I go to still does real straight shaves. In fact the guy who cuts my hair has a nice looking Palmera... $14 for a shave.

Old school barbering is pretty much dead in this state. Barbers are no longer allowed to shave with a straight.

any idea why? I mean to outlaw something seems kind of stringent. More stringent then I would have thought of for Alaska. Not dissing Alaska, but I always thought it was a "whatever" state.

That is way funny and exactly what I thought would be the general response. 50 bucks! Wow, not even if the barber was a barbette and had great swinging - hands - yeah thats it. hands.

An appointment to a barber's chair! Not in this life time!!

:)

Far out man, are you a time traveler from the 40s? :)

If I could find that around here, I would go for that in a second. And depending on how my face liked it, I could see splashing for that once a month or so.

Hopefully in walking distance.

I would guess you are talking about Red's. I've only been there once, but really liked the place. Unfortunately, Indiana BoH does not allow the use of a straight razor. They have to use a Shavette so they can replace the blade between each shave.

Aidan Gill for Men charges $40 for a shave... Mach 3 all the way. I laughed at the guy when he told me that the Mach 3 was the greatest razor ever invented and that if I were using anything else, I should switch immediately. The good news is that its only 10 minutes from my house and they have a good selection of the major brands.

The barber shave is pretty much a novelty in America today and a barber that shaves with a bonafide straight razor is a rarity. I wouldn't pay anyone to shave me with a shavette or a cartridge razor.

Yeah, it's pretty awesome. I think normally they shave you with a cartridge razor, but if you ask they'll do it with a straight. They always shave your neck and sideburns with the straight anyway.

My local barbershop provides a shave for $12. Includes a hot towel, preshave cream, and massage afterwards. A very invigorating experience. They use a shavette though.

My fiance got me a full shave at a local Shave shop here in Georgia for Valentine's Day. Everything was looking great until they pulled out a cartridge razor :thumbdown.

My fiance paid $55 for some guy to shave my face with a Mach3 :cursing:

The guy told me that Straights and DE were old fashion and that cartridge razors gave a better shave with less irritation. I decided that arguing with the guy was not worth it.

The shave was pretty descent, but I have had much better shaves with my DE.
