5/8ths or 6/8ths?

I know....I know.... it is all a matter of preference. But hey, just looking for anyone who has a strong opinion one way or another! I am looking at getting a new straight (dovo tortoise). My current and only straight is a 9/16. I have read that 5/8ths may be slightly more mobile, 6/8ths may give slightly more feedback/easier to visualize blade angle? Anyhow, any opinions or comments are welcome. thanks!

IMO (and preference, and YMMV!) I find 6/8 easier to work with. 13/16 works best for me, 7/8 is big, still enjoyable and bigger than that, it's a bit too big.

4/8-9/16-5/8 are still very good and excellent!

At present have two straights. A 5/8 and a 6/8. YMMV and all but I greatly prefer the 6/8. It plows through the stubble like its not even there. :w00t:

I kinda prefer a 6/8 over a 5/8 but am not sure why. Haven't really thought about it. Maybe it's just because there is more blade to look at and, as you say, that might give (or at least seem to give) better feedback/visualization.

thanks for the input so far guys. I was kinda leaning toward the 6/8 as is. Looks like I might have to give it a try...

I started with a 6/8 and after a month decided to give a 5/8 a try, just could't make peace with it though, for some reason it felt like it was half the size of the 6/8. actually i think i really want to start trying some even larger ones now, but as they say ymmv and there sure are a lot of 5/8 fans here so my advice would be to try them both. it may just be a matter of which one you learn on that dictates what you like???? but i dunno.

It's all personal preference. I've razors from 8/8 to 4/8, they all shave as well. Just go with the one that appeals to you most, you can't go wrong, really

Easier to cut yourself on a 6/8 razor?

I think it's easy to cut yourself on a straight razor regardless of the size.

Bigger is easier? I don't know, I did cut myself in the past with big and small razors and usually it's either technique or lather that is to blame, not the razor...

I prefer 6/8 because for some reason 5/8 razors just seem too small to me.
I don't know why, but even though I can get a good shave with a 5/8 razor I have no desire to own one. 7/8 feels too big to be manuverable, and 5/8 feel's too small to be a man's razor - 6/8 is just the perfect size for me!

YMMV as always

There is only one true answer to this question:

YMMV

Sorry :blushing:

I preffer a 6/8 - 8/8, but can have a wonderful shave with a 4/8.
That is wy we all need so many razors

You have to wonder if the guys who brag about using 8/8 razors are attempting to compensate for their other, uh, shortcomings. Like the guys who drive the monster trucks with oversize tires are the guys with really small, well you know. Fortunately I have never had that problem.

I have razors from 4/8 to 6/8 and I like them all. The smaller ones give more control in tight areas. The larger ones feel more efficient shaving flat areas.

I'm a relative novice and I have both 5/8 and 6/8 I prefer the 6/8 I'm not sure if it's because it is a better razor or not but I find it easier to shave with.

I have a few of each size and as far as I'm concerned there's little or no actual difference between the two. But I wish my first razor had been a 6/8 instead of 5/8 -- here's why.

5/8 was the most popular size. Most of the razors I see in the antique stores and on eBay are 5/8. So when I wanted my second, third, and fourth razors I was really curious about trying a different size. But most of the razors were 5/8, like the one I started with.

If you'll ever want a 6/8, might as well start with a 6/8. There'll be lots of the 5/8 razors to pick from but not as many 6/8.

Ok I know I am just a newbie but here is my 2 cents on this :tongue_sm

I think it is something no one has really thought of before.... Has anyone considered the size of your hand in relation to the size of the razor.... if you have really big hands then a larger ( i.e. 6/8 8/8 ) razor will feel like you have better control and someone with small hands would feel like they have better control with a 4/8 or 5/8 razor. This would make sense because someone with big hands would probably have a head and face that is proportionate to the size of the hand so the 6/8 8/8 razor would look and feel right for that person.

Ok now that I have said my 2 cents you are all free to tell me I am nuts and have no idea what I am talking about    :tongue_sm
