Williams as a face soap

I'm not sure if this belongs here or in the face, body and hair board, also forgive me if this has been discussed at length here before. I'm only six weeks into DE wet shaving and even less into B&B.

A friend of mine swears by using Williams as a face soap. Part of his reasoning is it is cheap, readily available and all the ingredients that make a shave soap are ideal facial cleansers.

He won't touch the stuff for shaving though. He is married to Proraso cream.

Anyone else do this?

I have tried to make Williams work as a shaving soap, and failed at least a couple dozen times. In the early days, after failure I would regulate it to duty in the shower. However, I find it incredibly drying to the skin, so it's totally worthless as shower soap too.

I think you can do much better than Williams for face soap.

Yardley is just as widely available, and just as cheap, but eons better as a shower and face soap. Yardley English Lavender is one of my favorites.

I use a puck of bay rum shaving soap made by "With nature in mind" to wash my face before I shave. I like the smell but could never get the soap to lather enough for shaving and did not want to just waste it.

The one thing that is kind of annoying about Williams is it seems harder to rinse off than any other soap I own. I think that may be an issue with why it could be drying for some?

I finished off a puck of Williams in the shower also once i discovered Cella!! I didn't have any problems with dry skin or "soap film". It lathered up nicely and did the job.....didn't smell as nice as some other bath soaps but it didn't go to waste......cheers, rich

Good observation on drying, but I like it for that very reason. I have extremely oily face skin and Williams is great for me, I get the closest shaves and NO razor burn with Williams. It may be Williams works very well for some like me and terrible for others like you. We all have different makeup and what works for one may-not for another. It does dry out the skin, but for me that's great because oil is a problem.
