Le Grand Chypre - there are no other soaps

I have as of late been trying many of the Barrister and Mann soaps - bought 3 tubs and a handful of samples. Tried the Seville first - felt it lived up to its reputation in performance and the scent. Next went to Lavanille and had the same stellar performance but was blown away by the scent, which I've paired with many different AS. I tried the Cheshire - fantastic scent and I thought 'got to get the AS next time I buy.' Next was LeGrand Chypre - the scent was phenomenal, stunning. I first thought 'I'm not using any other soap ever again. I guess I can give away my collection.' I think if you were to give a master class on soap creation, it would need to center on this soap.

Here is the detail from B&M on the scent:
Inspired by smells indigenous to the island nation of Cyprus, Le Grand Chypre ("Leh Grond SHEEP-ruh") combines notes of bergamot, lime, labdanum, oakmoss, and a touch of patchouli to produce an elegant, citrusy heart. We wrapped it in notes of peach, rose, frankincense, cedar, cinnamon, and other supporting smells to create an elegant, slightly fruity, freshly floral design perfectly suited to the refined shaver.

If you're wondering - I don't know B&M and have zero relationship with them other than using the products. I started with a DE in the 70s and came back to it in retirement. I find myself wondering how I shaved all those years with the products I was using.

I own sixteen Barrister & Mann. My favorites are: Passiflora, Nordost, Vespers and Fougere Gothique. All sixteen are very good including the new unscented.

I have tried Seville and LeGrand Chypre samples from Maggards. Of the two, I prefer LeGrand Chypre. However, the scent from both were very mild so hard to get too excited about. This could be partly due to it being a sample. On the Maggard’s website for soaps if you sort by Bestsellers, Seville is often the top, and LeGrand Chypre is on middle of the first page (of 36).

Personally, I incline more towards Ariana and Evans K2 tallow base, with, so far, Peach and Cognac my favorite scent which is also one of their more potent scents (some are also on the weak side). i highly recommend picking up a sample from Maggards to try.

I would not consider Le Grand Chypre mild in my experience but ymmv. Thanks

I am pleased to hear this. Would you consider Seville scent similar or weaker in terms of scent potency? I have purchased 30-40 shave soap samples from Maggards (and about 10 from Stirling), over the past year and half or so. I suspect that some of scent strengths could be weak from being taken from an open jar. I have found this with TOBS, A&E and others. But, all my samples of Chiseled Face have potent, masculine scents - but I think that is what they were going for.

Good point. I do think Seville is not as strong a scent and I believe it fades faster (I have only used the Seville soap and AS) than the Le Grand Chypre. I do very much like the Seville scent.

Wow, that is a big sample collection. I'll have to look.

Why buy a tub of something I may or may not like. So I try samples first. Generally, about two of a brand I am interested in. If I like, then I try a few more scents. I have it narrowed down to about 4-5 favored soap makers. Each sample gets 6-8 shaves. MDC will likely get at least 10-12. Stirling 1 ounce sample pucks from their website get roughly 12+

Here is what I currently have from Maggards samples

That's great. I did the same, just not on that scale. I got about 10 samples of TOBS, then Chiseled Face, then a half dozen at Barrister and Mann...I'm doing Noble Otter right now. I like most of them, just picking scents is the thing. I'm not crazy about TOBS but I can see why some love them.
