What's new

Whooo! Finally got some Bay Rum to try out.

Finally got a package from Bullgoose with, amongst other sundries, a bottle of Ogalla Bay Rum. After a good shave with little to no burn from the alum block, I slapped on a little of the bay rum this morning.

Hmmmm... Huh, no burning. I thought people always said that...

OH GOD! IT BURNS US!! IT BURNS WITH THE HEAT OF A THOUSAND SUNS!!!

... 2 minutes later...

WHY DOESN'T IT STOP BURNING??? IT'S AS IF THE ASHES OF PHOENIX ARE RISING UP AGAIN ON MY FACE!!!

... 5 minutes later...

MY HANDS!!! WHY MUST THEY BURN TOO!!! I'LL NEVER DRINK RUM OR EAT BAY LEAVES AGAIN!!!

... 10 minutes later...

Ooooh... smells very clovey. I feel like the fabled Christmas pudding of a Dickensian feast.

Needless to say, there was some minor discomfort in the process.

Man, posts like this are totally bumming me out. People tell me Ogalla Bay Rum smells like gingerbread which makes me want it more than any shaving item right now besides a new brush, but everyone says it burns like hell fire.

I have used all his products and I can just say for ME it does not burn.. a mild tingle that I quite enjoy... as usual YMMV.. I use it almost every shave, and I can not think of a better person to deal with then John.

I like Master Bay Rum and Ogallala Bay Rum. Pinaud VI Bay Rum burns too much for my tastes. Plus, it smells too sweet/clovey for me.

Never had any burn from Ogallala AS. If I want some burn I use Pinaud's Bay Rum.

Make sure you shake the Ogallala well before using.

Totally opposite experience for me.

Pinaud goes on light and smooth with just a normal little alcohol tingle. Ogallala, even well shaken, burns like the devil for a good 3 minutes.

With that said, everyone should try both, it burns but it burns good if you know what I mean.

Please don't admit in public that you are afraid of trying an aftershave

Yeah, I made sure to give it a good shake today. No burning but a lasting warming though I feel that it is not as strongly scented as before. I hope I didn't decant off one of the essential oils when I forgot to shake it yesterday.

Funny thing. The straight Ogalla bay rum burns me like crazy. The sandalwoof or peppercorn versions - not so much...

Love the smell. Just need to have my man boots on before applying the "real stuff...."

Same here -- I get some burn from the regular stuff, but little to no burn from the sandalwood or the lime & peppercorn. For what it's worth, the lime & peppercorn is in my top 3 ever, and I am a bay rum afficionado. All of the Ogallalas (say it fast for maximum effect) are fantastic stuff that I wholeheartedly recommend without reservation. The burn I get from the regular bay rum isn't a sharp "on fire" type, but more a dull burn that fades.

Be seeing you.

I uase Pineaud's BR, and it has a mild alcohol burn, then its fine. It has a great spicey smell that I and SWMBO love.

I don't get a lot of burn from ogalla bay rum what I do get is, "you smell like Christmas" and that's just fine by me.

I've used Pinaud Clubman "Virgin Islands" Bay Rum for quite a while now and it gives a great burn with a nice tingle and a great scent. I received a sample of the Ogallalla Bay Rum fro Phil at Bullgoose last week and tried it immediately after that days shave. It burns more than the Clubman and smells more clovey as well. I liked it very much but I would say the cent and burn are stronger than Clubman Bay Rum. I had'nt tried an AS with Witch Hazel before, though, as the Ogallalla does, and I would say my face did feel pretty good after I tried it.

I noticed how nice my face feels too. I already use witch hazel on my face before I apply after shave so it is surprising that it makes a lot of difference. Actually though, I would like the scent to be stronger. An hour after application it is very difficult for me to catch the scent.

If you like Bay Rum without the burn, try Bigelow's Bay Rum after shave balm. It's a great balm. It smells good, it goes on easy, and it works quite well. My face smells and feels like a million bucks after I use it. It's not particularly strong though (which I like).

The Ogallala is amazing on the skin. I use it the same way - after WH. I do one more application before I leave for the day and never have to apply a balm, which I have to do with a lot of other products. Two applications gives the scent more oomph and it lasts a while longer. I also use the cologne, which is virtually the same as the AS from what I can tell. I use them interchangeably. Thus, you could get the special reserve and apply that -- it has quite a kick and the scent should last a long time.

Be seeing you.

I think I'm totally hooked on Bay Rum. I love the Ogallala Double strength cologne, Lime & peppercorn, Barclay Crocker balm...Oh, heck I just love it all.

Occassionally I'll get a bit of burn, but that just makes me love it more. I splash it on my face, it runs down my clothing, I rub it in my hair....Oh dear..I have BRAD!!

But it definately needs to be shaken well. Apparently it takes really high alcohol percentage to keep the oils in suspension, and in lower percentages you can get various separations and concentrations at the top of the bottle....maybe can increase the burn.

But dont worry about it, you either love Bay Rum or hate it. And if you love it you can forgive its occassional misdemeanors. And make sure you wear it big and strong, so the whole world can share the enjoyment!
