What's new

Who makes a good/decent Dopp kit?

Mine, a nylon zippered bag with no pockets or dividers, is falling apart. It's about 35 years old. I went over to REI to get a new one and every one they had seemed really over-organized. Lots of little zippered pockets, holders of bottles, etc. I checked Amazon but the REI experience has made me distrust the web, because on the REI website the kits looked reasonable, but in person - no.

So, any recommendations?

This might be overkill for you, but it's what I bought.

I really like it. It seems very sturdy and has been holding up well so far. Plenty of room in the top for shaving creams and such, and the bottom is zippered with nylon loops to hold bottles of stuff like witch hazel, etc.

Anyways, it's a decent price and is large. Small zipper section in the top part for blades and what have you.

Daines & Hathaway makes a really nice miltary style roll up kit - I bought one some years ago and it's still giving great service.

I saw some nice ones at Target last weekend. I think they were Swissgear? The prices were also reasonable. I just purchased a nice Fossil one off the bay for $23 shipped.

Cabela Ripcord Shower Kit. I've been using mine for a few years now with no visible signs of wear. Everything is organized by it's own pocket or loop. It's a hanging kit that is a steal at less than $20.

I don't like the "bags" because I don't like digging through stuff to find something.

I picked up a little faux-leather bag from Wal*Mart for four or five bucks. Nothing fancy, but it does the job, and doesn't look half bad.

I have a hanging shaving kit marketed by Swiss Army. It has plenty of space for everything that I want to carry, and I can hang it up on a towel bar or shower curtain rod for easy access. It's supposed to have a special anti-bacterial lining. That may or may not mean anything, but I've used it for several years now, often in tropical climates for extended periods of time, and it never gets moldy. It cleans up with no problem and still looks new after a lot of rough use. I'll post a link to a site with pictures. They have it listed for about $55, but I picked up one for my wife last Christmas for $35.

Thats mine. Big enough to hold the essentials but small enough that stuff doesnt get lost. No micromanaging compartments either which I like, just a big open space and a couple of small zipper slots on the outside. Also its made of high quality nylon to resist rips and can stand up to being tossed around. I haven't yet, but I'm pretty sure I could travel all the necessary components for a DE shave in this with ample room.

Cole Haan has a whole line of shaving kits - maybe too small?

The brown leather woven and the ballistic nylon bags are really nice. I prefer shaving kits that are flexible and bought a Trufitt and Hill bag yesterday. Now that I see the cole haan, I may cancel my order......

My wife and I each got one of these as RAs at Central Michigan University back in 1999. We've used them extensively since, in all kinds of weather and climates. Mine is rarely filled, hers bulges to the brim and can barely be zippered. Neither has every split a seam, popped a zipper, or even become stained despite being left wet in suitcases for trips home.

Seriously, this thing looks like brand new after 10 years of abuse. For $25.00 for a medium sized one (all you'll ever need!), the price is unbelievable, too.

My mom got me the Bellwood from Cole Haan - it's not super-flexible but it's not rigid either (it's kind of like a little suitcase). I'm not sure if this was by intention, but it has a nice, shallow zippered compartment on the bottom that would be perfect for holding a straight razor (or a toothbrush, which is probably what they meant it for). Plenty of room in it, and the leather is, as you would expect, amazing. The T&H one sure looks nice though.
