TSA warning for razors

Well the Movie is called Taking Chance, staring Kevin Bacon.

Good example of a Marine Office who took Escort Assignment Serious. He was escort KIA to Wyoming.

Plus let’s say unpleasant experience with not too bright TSA Employee.
I understand you were in the Marine Corps in the early to mid 60's. That would make you one of the most senior Corps veterans on the site.

Please go to the Active Duty / Veteran Sign Up - https://www.badgerandblade.com/forum/threads/active-duty-veteran-sign-up.632186/ and tell the forum the basic details of your service. Many of us appreciate such things.

I think you have led an interesting, and sometimes a tough life. An authentic Joe.

Last time I took flight was 2009. I know it’s not an option for some folks but I prefer to drive when I can. Typically if it’s less than 10hrs I’ll just drive. Luckily, everyone I know lives within that 10hr rule.

Next time mail your goodies home. Might cost you a bit more but it will be worth it to not deal with TSA making up rules on the spot depending on their mood.

I wonder if they confiscated the soaps because of the volume? I had TSA confiscate a tub of yogurt that was probably the same/similar size as a tub of shaving soap. I definitely agree with the suggestion of mailing them home next time.

I had a chuckle once when I was traveling. Was going through TSA and a family of four was in front of me; mom, dad and two small boys. For whatever reason TSA flagged all four of them and tore their bags apart, including the two kids' carry-on bags. I was immediately behind them and got through without a hitch. Got to my destination and began to unpack and in the top pocket of my carry-on/backpack found a tube of SABRE pepper spray gel that I forgot was even there! Had to laugh because the family in front of me had their luggage tuned inside out and nobody said a word to me about my pepper spray. On the way back I buried that in my checked bag.

In-law of mine has to travel a lot for work, which includes bringing his own tools. Almost always has a Leatherman on his belt, even when not at work. Lost a few of them over the years because he forgets to pack them in the checked luggage. Become a bit of a running family joke. :001_rolle

This isn’t exactly news, this has been the issue for quite some time, I don’t understand the whole carry on baggage thing people are so hung up on. Just check your luggage.
Yup, don't mess around with the TSA, you'll usually lose. If you don't want to check baggage, package it up and send it USPS or UPS. Not a fan of the TSA, however, they fill a necessary role and I don’t envy them their job. A mistake can have catastrophic consequences so not unexpectedly they’ll fail conservatively. Hardly a day goes by without a YouTube video of someone melting down at a checkpoint. Last year thousands of handguns were confiscated from carry-on bags.

So, I am somewhat new to the community. I've been wet shaving for the last month or so with a Merkur 34C. I went to NYC recently from Canada and got an opportunity to go to Pasteur's and got myself 2 soaps and a Razorock Lupo for my birthday. I was genuinely excited as I had heard great things from here. However, TSA stopped me and confiscated it all. Thanks for that TSA!

Apparently, you cannot bring on razors that are in a box even with a carry on. I am saddened as this was pretty much the only things I bought from my trip.

Warning I guess?

So because I was not with you at time of confirmation with TSA is Razor have Blade in it? Was the box you mention holding Cap, Base Plate and Handle only? The Tins of Shave soap I do not get at all.

There was great Real Cops Training Film, back when I went through Rio Hondo in Whittier, CA. Title was Discretionary Decision Making.

I see no weapon or threat with Empty DE Razor or Soap, think there is more to story, or you got Deputy Barney from Mayberry working for TSA.

This is beyond ridiculous and as former military I'm also offended by it!! Not cool at all. :mad5:

Guys, he's joking about military members being a "dangerous weapon".
He's ex-military too (Semper Fi).
What possible offense could one take at a joke about the TSA being dumb enough to prevent military members from flying because military training makes them a dangerous weapon?
Toughen up campers! :lol1:

So I just traveled a few weeks ago. I took my Van Der Hagen TTO safety razor in my carry-on and packed a tuck of Derby Extra blades in my checked bag.
They opened up my carry-on and STILL made me explain the razor even though I knew it was within the rules and there were no blades in it.
Don't get me started ...🙄

Did they take it?

You could have gone back from security and mailed the goods to yourself (although I'm not sure what postal options there are at that specific airport)

@Six - just curious, which soaps were they; B&M are not terribly hard soaps, hence my comment about being cautionary about glycerin content

This is exactly why I don't travel or get on planes for any reason. The minute you decide that you are going to travel on a plane, thats when you are going to be subjecting yourself to the whims of the TSA agents. And like has been said in this thread, depending on what kind of day the agents are having, is how much pain and inconvenience they will subject you to. You'd think that they would be regulated by the government, but nope, they run amuk nearly 100% of the time. I have 0-faith in our countries travel system.

@Six I am truly sorry that the TSA confiscated your expensive razor and soap. I know all too well how expensive things are these days. And the TSA effectively ruined your birthday, and gave you a really bad experience of flight based travel, which is why I don't ever travel. My hope for your future is, this might provide you an opportunity to save up for a really high end razor, like one from Timeless for example, that can provide you the best shaves of your life.

But yeah, ever since 9/11 happened, everybody is treated as a possible bad actor, no matter how good of a person you are. I would never allow myself to be subjected in such a demeaning way. I even learned how the TSA are allowed to pat down children in a not so good way, in the name of security. No thanks, don't want any part of it. I think the only kind of good flight, is probably flying your own plane as a private pilot. Cause it sure as heck aint public flight transit!

Really?

if you had put all your purchases in your checked luggage there woulda been no problem. Carryon? Nope. When I worked at the airport I cant tell you all the times I had to dispose of passengers toothpaste, shampoo etc, etc because they were over the allowable volume.

It's been said before...

Logic and facts are irrelevant.

The TSA agents get to decide what you can carry on. They sometimes (or even often) make decisions that defy logic, but there are a number of possible reasons:
  • They are ignorant of the actual regulations.
  • They don't want to get in trouble for making a mistake.
  • They are having a bad day.
  • They are egotistical and like the power.
  • They are following a specific local directive.
  • ...etc.
I have decided that the regulations regarding shaving items that are allowed are basically irrelevant due to the wide latitude given to TSA agents to restrict whatever they want according to their whim. Best to just check the bag.
