Thinking about Putting MdC into a Mug

I have the wood bowl of Martin de Candre. I thought the wood bowl would make for easier loading because it's so wide. It does to a point, but the problem with wood bowls, be they from Harris, AOS, or whomever, is that a real mess is made during loading. I put my Klar Seifen in my Old Spice mug and it's made loading the brush much more effective. More of the pro to-lather works up into the brush instead of dumping all over the sides of the tin resulting in an even more rich lather. I'm thinking of doing the same with my MdC. I just need to find a suitable mug. Vintage blades has some nice shaving mugs, but their shipping is kind of steep. I don't fancy paying $8.00 shipping on a $15.00 mug.

Anyone ever done this with their MdC? Was it better, worse, the same? Your thoughts?

Mugs may be traditional but I don't like them, to small and to noisy. Most of my bowls are antique store finds 4" - 6" dia.

There's always a little slop when loading, but it shouldn't be a real mess. If you're loading dry, try a bit drier. If you're loading wet, then don't press the brush in quite so much and spend a bit more time loading instead. When I load most soaps there's no more than a tablespoon of suds thrown off at most, which isn't a problem in even a small wooden bowl. If you want to use a mug, then by all means do so. There won't be any impact on performance, it'll require a slight adaptation to your loading at most (if it's deep down in the mug and your brush is short-handled, you may wind up rapping your knuckles quite a bit).

I check Goodwill every now and then for hand thrown pottery or old vintage bowls or mugs. I have a small, beautiful hand thrown bowl that looks like it might have been an an arts and crafts project - it's a it crude, which I like - and it's perfect as a shaving bowl! I think I payed 2.50 for it. I'll bet if you check them out, you'll find something cool and appropriate, for around 3 dollars or less!

PS: How could McD in ANYTHING, be bad!

I put mine in a glass bowl. I happened to have some cheap latex gloves laying around, and it made the job real easy. The MdC isn't sticky.

I have the same wooden bowl of MdC. Been using MdC for about 3 months and its still over the brim (this soap is a machine).
I personally would leave it as be. I know it can be a little messy but it would seem like more work taking the soap out.

I love the MdC smell and so mine stays in a jar and I take about a week's worth out at a time and put it in a little suribachi I bought off ebay for 10 bucks. Like Oscar11 says, mugs are too narrow and noisy and I worry that they'll chip or scratch my brushes which cost me much more than the mug and/or soap.

As previous posters have said: consider loading with a drier brush.

I've both the bowl and the glass butter dish version of MdC. The butter dish is quite small and could get messy, but I load with a drier brush and take a bit extra time to load, then start face lathering and adding water to the brush by hand.

The bowl version has become my main shaving soap now, and I'm thinking of transferring the butter dish version to a shaving stick for travelling but not got round to it as yet...

My guess is that it gets too messy because the soap is to the brim of the bowl. Why not remove some of the soap and put it in a ziploc container for storage. Leave about half the soap in the bowl and that should remove your over-flow troubles. Once you go through that, put the other half in. You get to keep the nice bowl on display and remove your issue.

I do not own the bowl version so I have no idea if you'd have the issue even with half the soap in the bowl. I have the original glass container and I'm about halfway through the soap. It's a lot less messy now than it was when the soap was to the brim.
