Tequila Top 3

Ok some of you may know and some of you might not know that Tequila is not just something you shoot when you are 18 and live to regret it the next morning, it is also not just the adder to the perfect margarita. Tequila is like a fine scotch or brandy. I’m serious….you can drink it straight with no nasty after taste at all, clean and crisp. There 3 different common types, Blanco, reposado, and Anejo. This has to do with how long the tequila has rested in the oak barrel. So I just wanted to throw out my 3 favorite tequilas and see if there are any tequila lovers out there.

Good choices...Have you had the Paradiso? I don't think it warrants the price differential over the other 3.

I would also say the Corazon offerings are good and for the price I like Corralejo Reposado.

Tequila is one of those things that can be Very Good or VERY Bad.

I like the Corralejo as well, i have a bottle. And I agree, I tried a Jose Curevo anejo that was special botteled and it was horrible. I think this is why I am a reposado fan more than anejo.

I like the Corralejo as well, i have a bottle. And I agree, I tried a Jose Curevo anejo that was special botteled and it was horrible. I think this is why I am a reposado fan more than anejo.

Don't judge anejo based on one bottle. That's usually my favorite of the bunch.

i think it's because it's just really oaky. Where i find reposado's to be more crisp, clean with just a hint of oak. I agree, need to spread my wings on the anejos. Thanks!!!

Well, they are aged longer. And as with most things, you like what you like. If that's not your thing, who am I to dissagree with you.

Tasted it, but it's hard to justify a price of well over $100 for a bottle of rotgut, I mean tequila. It was good, but as you said, not worth the upcharge.

I can't stand the taste of any alcohol but I do get my dad a bottle of the nicer tequilas whenever I am in Mexico...mostly the higher end Don Julio. From the least to most offensive (to my easily offended taste buds) in descending order:

Don Julio Anejo Real
Don Julio 1942
Don Julio Anejo
Don Julio Reposado
Don Julio Blanco

I suppose it is not suprising that the list correlates directly with price. In our 'just for fun' taste tests with friends judging the Don Julios vs an assortment of standard issue tequilas we had in our cupboards, as you move up the line from so called "rail" tequilas like the Sauza's or Jose Cuervo's, etc (apparently called "bug killers" by many Mexican connoiseurs) to the higher end Don Julio's they do indeed become increasingly easier for me to swallow (smoother?). They lose that harsh tequila "bite" you associate with Cuervo, Sauza, etc and take on different almost undetectable hints of fruit or vanilla flavors. However, they still taste like tequila and alcohol and that's enough to make MY gag reflex go off. My dad and friends could easily tell the difference but I don't know if I could recommend spending any more than what a bottle of Don Julio Anejo costs unless you are a true tequila freak. The differences become increasingly hard to detect and the prices jump startlingly. I have tried a few other higher end tequilas, Patrons, etc but have not engaged in direct head to head taste tests as we did with the Don Julios so I am not sure where I would place them on the list.

I actually prefer blancos, the least aged and expensive; I think they have enough bite to be interesting. Others can be so smooth as to be barley recognizable as tequila. But my favorites:

Patron Silver
Patron Anejo
Patron Reposado

They are often ludicrously priced, but a trip to Mexico (an hour away for me) or the occasional specials at Costco put them within reach. Just don't waste it in some blue marguarita or some such nonsense!

i liked the asombroso & casa noble but i didn't think it was worth the $$. carazon is very good for the price. i tend to stick with reposado and anejo tequila.

I think my like for the Asombroso was swayed by the fact that I met the owners and they gave my manager and I a bottle. It was still a great tequila and I ended up buying a bottle.

i tried the blanco and didn't think too much of it. i noticed on their website they have a variety of types with different resting times & various aging barrels. i had emailed them a few times asking for new release dates and the reply was, "maybe in a few months". perhaps they are still tweaking those? if you register at their site, they will send you a nice shirt.
