No great bargain, this Star 1912 cost me a sawbuck in Belle Fourche, SD. Good hunting for shave goods in that town.

Dawn and a toothbrush cleaned up the scummy head very easily. After looking at the photos, I sent the handle for a second bath.

I have 7 other 1912s: Gems and Ever-Readys in various finishes, handle types/lengths, and cosmetic states. But this is my only Star. I think there are 1912 Treets...

Picked this up at an antique mall today. Any info that can be provided about the possible manufacturing time frame is appreciated, and what blades will work with this if I decide to try it?

That is the 1924 patented Shovelhead, in my book a masterpiece. The patent applied for versions are supposed to have been produced from 1919 to 1924, I recall. American Safety Razor made them.

The PTFE coated Gem blade (by Personna) is the modern blade standard, but other Gem type SE blades are available. I recommend corking a PTFE before first use in a Shovelhead. PM me and I'll mail you a couple.

@Hydguy BTW, your blade stops look worn. If you use it, make sure the blade edge rests firmly against the stops. For reference, here is a picture of one of my Shovelheads with one intact, fully hooked, stop L and one worn stop R.

ah.. I see that. Both are missing on the one I picked up.. wonder if the nubs are still able to hold a blade for use?
Oh well, I was hoping to save a razor, but it looks like this one isn't usable. Too bad....
And I can see why this design kinda fell to the wayside...
