Single Edge Razor Acquisition Thread.

GEM Clog Pruf Micromatic came in the other day to complete my "MicroMatic Trio" -- the top cap was a little lazy to open, but after soaking in dawn and water for a day and working it over with mineral oil the TTO spins freely and the top will pop open when the TTO is given a quick spin, but turning the TTO slowly sometimes causes it to hang halfway open, but a quick shake and it pops fully open. It closes tight and locks down and forward, so I'm going to leave well enough alone and it will probably loosen up more with use. Cleaned, polished and once given a barbicide dip, it'll be ready for MicroMatic Monday!

I've never found my way over to this part of the forum before, it's interesting around here! I havent used a safety razor in quite a while, I (nearly) exclusively shave with straights. That being said, I keep a short list of safety razors I wouldn't mind owning and I finally came across another today. As you can guess by my posting in this thread its a single edge. After very occasional searching over the last few year I found a Jones shake sharp at a reasonable price. Just pulled the trigger a few minutes ago. I have to say, I'm quite excited!

First post on the single edge side of the safety razors. Recently bought an GEM G bar set and currently awaiting delivery from the US to the Netherlands. The last shipment took 9 weeks so hopefully it won't take as long this time. In the meantime I discussed the correct blade type on an Dutch facebookgroup and whas gifted an couple of blades and to my surprise also an star OC razor.

You'll definitely enjoy your shave with that G bar and Tabac set up. Great set up

After impatiently waiting for a Covid affected Royal Mail to make a delivery, my newest and first SE razor has arrived, a RazorRock Hawk v.3 in stainless steel. I have been interested in the Feather AC shavettes but after trying a Parker SRX (once only) it and I decided that I would not have the manual dexterity or bravery to use it or similar open razors. A safer option seemed to be an SE razor.

After some research, I had the Blackland Vector and the Hawk on my list. I went with the Hawk because of it's lower price and from what I read and saw, it was generally considered less aggressive than the Vector. Small steps to start with and if I like the SE shaves, I'll have a Vector to aim for later. Aesthetically though, the Vector looks beautiful.

I bought my Hawk from Shaving Station in the UK and was pleased to note that it came on a super-knurled handle, rather than the bamboo which I'd seen on earlier reviews. I've used a knurled handle on a GC that I had previously. Again after reading many reviews and comments here, I thought I would go straight for the Pro blades rather than a milder or guarded blade. I may as well jump in the deep end, although I will be very careful.

At the time of writing, I've not yet had a shave with it, given the delayed delivery and work commitments but I am looking forward to using it and seeing how I get on, with that pineapple soap! :)

Found this in a ziploc bag clipped to a rack of earrings and vintage costume jewelry--a pristine GEM 1912 "squat head" razor in the original cardboard carrier and case (displayed in the sun unfortunately at some point). Researching online, it appears to be part of a promotional give-away from Star Brand Shoes, advertising the "The Patriot Shoe for Men" (there are also brass shoe-shaped pocket knives out there as well). Best guess timeframe is the 1920s due to the style of shoe, the GEM Double Life Blade (rusty/unusable) and the local store "C.S. Betts" being in business before 1912 through at least 1931. Although faded, the case liner is in great shape and the razor appears unused as there was only (until next Monday) as all I did was lightly brush with Dawn, no plate loss, no damage, no flea bites and no Flitz needed to make it shine.C59B5E5E-0B0A-45BA-AC66-249AD52EC874.jpegBA7D8060-44D7-49B5-A01F-662E7A797AFF.jpegF0EBC8CD-2FC2-4B4E-99F7-B39E1EE9C961.jpeg

This Micromatic Flying Wing aka Bullet tip came yesterday. There is no "guiding eye" and it has the plastic knob, which was started in 1950. I love the way the knob has yellowed with age, as would real ivory. I believe this may be the last Gem with the Micromatic moniker, but I could be wrong about that.
