Razor ID, Gentlemen?

The razor sure looks like a copy of a Gillette Old Type. The markings, "MER" and Solingen makes me wonder if, perhaps it might be an early Merkur, but I've certainly never seen a Merkur with that trademark, so I guess we'll have to hope someone with more knowledge of German razors can shed some light on this.

I recall that AsylumGuido has done some research on German product in the past. Perhaps that trademark will ring a bell with Guido. :001_rolle

Found the following: http://www.archivingindustry.com/cutlers&toolmakers/razormakers.htm

Sublim-Gesellschaft Broch & Kessel, Solingen-Merscheid, Fürker Strasse 38 in 1939. Brand names: 'Mer', 'Sublim'. Razor-blade maker

Not positive if this Mer is the same as your Mer, but it's a starting point.

cheers,

rick

I think you might have something there. The Gillette Old Type patent would have expired by that point and several companies were putting out clones. Merkur had its own identity and would not have been likely to jump on the cloning bandwagon.

Two days in a row for me now . . . start reading a thread, realize that it is resurrected, and AsylumGuido's wisdom pops up.

Spooky . . . way too spooky!
