What's new

My new $7 razor is making me rethink everything

It seems to be the same design for at least 38 years, indicating it does the job well.

You don't have to spend $7 to get great shaves, though. The 1970s Tech design and the click are both available in the $1 range.

They all do the same thing.

I love your razor stand helicopter - fabulous collection btw buddy.

Now I`m loving shaving more with the Aleppo soap and Arabian oud colognes etc - I`m getting more attention from the Dragon - so Thanks to All You Guys for kicking me up the arse and getting me more domesticated !
She says I`ll never be tamed - bit late now - I`m 59 in a few days !

Beet her to it!
I have been using a Blackbird Lite lately with great results. It’s been my daily driver and I’ve been content that it’d be the last razor I purchase. It just works for me and I was able to see myself using it for the rest of my life. I tried NUMEROUS razors before it. This Blackbird and a Timeless SS being the most expensive (I’ve since returned the Timeless due to the Blackbird being better for me). With it being expensive, I don’t want to bring it traveling just in case it went missing or something and I’d be out nearly $200.

In came my journey to find a travel razor and my first stop was Aliexpress. With a welcome deal, I was able to get a Baili BD179 for insanely cheap. Awesome! It came and I shaved with it and it was extremely mild and smooth. Okay shave but not the best. It would’ve been fine for travel though and it was cheap as hell. I’m talking like $4 shipped cheap! I was pretty content for maybe a week that I found my travel razor since it came with a convenient case, does the job and it’s a super smooth shaver. I think it looks pretty cool though.

Not sure why or how, but I stumbled upon the Wilkinson Sword Classic. The black plastic one. And let me tell you…I am pissed off guys. This $7 razor shaves the same, if not better than every single razor I’ve ever tried. I’ve tried a lot. This damn $7 razor works so well with my hair and skin. It shaves almost the same as my beloved Blackbird Lite. The difference is, the Blackbird is $193 more expensive. If I knew or got this razor at the beginning of my traditional wet shaving “journey”, I’m not sure I’d be here posting this right now. I’m not a collector. I wouldn’t consider myself super into the hobby or anything. I like a good shave and like the experience. This damn $7 razor has fulfilled that.

Now, is this razor and its performance enough for me to sell the Blackbird? Probably haha…but I might wait a bit. Simply because I love the Blackbird. And it honestly doesn’t hurt or take up a lot of space to keep both razors. It just makes me upset. I also haven’t even used my preferred blade with it yet!

A couple concerns with it though…I haven’t been able to find it on any of the Wilkinson Sword websites so I’m guessing it’s been discontinued. That sucks. I have an itchy trigger finger and I’m going to order like 5 (probably just 2 👀) more on Amazon for backup/just in case which leads me into my second concern…how durable is this razor? With it being mostly plastic, how long do these things last? I’m big on BIFL when possible. I take care of my things and I’m especially diligent when it’s things I have to use every day. Is it realistic with care, this can last a lifetime?

What an amazing razor for $7. Unbelievable.
Buying high end razors has never been a “it shaves better” thing for me. Although it might be true in some cases. It’s pride of ownership in something I enjoy doing. That’s all..

Oh right - got you StewB - sorry for the inadvertent colloquialism - I`ve lived in Kokomo, Indy for 6 mths seeing Julie and Lee after Chrysler closed down and I helped out Babs in Livermore, California before ending up in Mesa, Arizona after a tough divorce and stranded, confused teenage Son, Julian - stayed with the poor darlings for over a year.

Also seen 40 cities Stateside on biz for 3-4 days - so I know hardly anything about the full 50 States in the Scheme of things really.

So, to elucidate and reiterate, tickerty-boo means alright (especially) at the present time and potty means mentally unstable or somebody with a DSM 5+ certifiable psychiatric illness at the time in America and to a lesser degree in the States and Europe etc.

I hope I`ve been sufficiently satisfactorily explanatory for the multiple audiences on this forum -

Thank You All for your furthering forbearance and fealty for the cause.
Well, that was quite the grand tour! You’ve certainly racked up more air miles than a reality TV star on a world crisis tour. Kokomo to Mesa, via Livermore and a sprinkling of 40 cities in between—sounds like you could write the next great American road trip novel! And as for "tickerty-boo" and "potty," I think we've all graduated from your crash course in Colloquialisms 101. Not sure if we get diplomas, but I’m hoping for at least a shiny sticker!

Thanks for the clarification—I’m feeling positively tickerty-boo now, and slightly less potty than usual. Cheers to the next adventure and may it involve fewer stranded teenagers and more relaxing vistas!

I have this one (paid 4.99); a feather tto ($15) and a Rapira $1.99; all unused. never tried them.....maybe one day.

As I was about to order more of these razors for backup since it seems to be discontinued, the price jumped to a whopping $7.03! Haha.

Speaking of which, although the beginning of this thread was to claim there’s basically no need to get/use anything other than this Wilkie…are there any razors out there like it that has “better” materials? I haven’t found anyone really speaking on any durability issues this razor, I was just curious.

I’m sure with care this razor has the potential to last years. I think that’s my biggest concern. I’d rather not worry about it ever breaking or anything like that. I know I’d have backups (probably going to order 3), but still 😅

With a lot of my favourite things I have at least one duplicate for emergencies in case of fire, theft and flood - obviously but also to mitigate against wear etc especially with steadfast vital supplies that make our lives so much better in comparison to other, run of the mill tools or provisions in times of uncertainty, war and scarcity for example.

I do stock up and hoard too much but that is intuitive after surviving lean times in an active war zone or when I have been bereft after illness and tragedy and the spare affords me priceless piece of mind and comfort giftofbab.

Thank you so much for getting a lot of us to reevaluate and question our current and future trajectory with a hobby that can be so necessary incorporating everyday life that it is truly open-ended and goes against the grain (no pun intended) and makes a daily chore into a pleasant, satisfying, rewarding grooming ritual.

With these being less than $10, why not? I actually want more because once my son is at the age to shave, maybe I’ll give him one if he’d like.

I don’t want to change anyone’s thoughts or ideas as to what to buy for the hobby. But for me, this razor is more than enough. I can look at and use my Blackbird and still have the same satisfaction and admire the design and craftsmanship being CNC while also being a little upset a $7 razor I picked up after the fact performs just as good, if not better for my uses.

I think if you’re going strictly for tool and to just shave, this Wilkie is the one in my experience and at less than $10 it’s a no brainer. Like I said, I wish I just started with it instead of going down the rabbit hole. This razor (technically the Blackbird) is making me climb out of the hole.

Glad you brought this thread back to Earth. There’s a section in the middle of this thing where I have no idea what is being said, tickerty-boos and bespoke stereos in Hong Kong and whatever, ***.

Oh that one - the three quid one - they must be rare as Rocking Horse **** - Cos I`ve not seen hardly any and I`ve been shaving 4 decades plus.

If I see one - I`ll grab you one and post it - no worries. - the grey plastic/aluminium handle with the plastic button on the right hand side which pops the head up - you`re laughing mate - easy peasy - lemon squeezy.

Don`t ask me what it was called - cos I`ve got a memory like an amnesiac goldfish - `What was that question again - I haven`t got a Danny ?`

I`ll break down cockney rhyming slang - Danny = Danny La Rue ( famous female impersonator from Manchester UK in the seventies on telly etc )
then La Rue = clue - gorrit - got the Danny haha !

Lived all over London and New York City - love Chigwell and The Brewery respectively very well - knew the local lingo (deffo not now), the Cant Gypsy language, the Jamaican evolved gangsta Patios etc "Gawd Bless `em Guvnor" - I know the score - I`ve zigged and zagged - 4 passports since `69 and 62 Countries - Just had no choice - chucked in the deep end on biz and had certifiable family everywhere etc !

I`m the normal white sheep - compared to the rest of `em - and I used to stand on the roof of trains doing 100mph+ after a vodka and skunk sesh - approaching tunnels standing up 2 secs before impact sorts the men from the boys because you`ve got no head left - just a body - if you`re lucky and you`re not vapourised by a 200 year old stone bridge - happy daze !
That's very kind of you but I have all the razors I need.
