Pipe and cigar Trade/Piff Poll

Should B&B allow members to trade/PIF Pipe tobacco or cigars?

  • I am in favor of tobacco trades/PIFs for pipe and cigar as outlined below and may participate.

  • I wouldn't want to participate but I do not object to allowing others to trade/PIF as described.

  • I would not participate and I do object to tobacco trades/PIFs for pipe and cigar as outlined below.

This is all about should we.
As someone whose family has had tragedies because of tobacco use, I'm struggling with this one. My gut belief is that we should not because it can come across as promoting the use of tobacco, which doesn't sit well with me. Mind you, I do like the smell of pipes and good cigars having smoked those in the past myself. But I can't bring myself to do that anymore. Too much distruction in the family.

I've watched this forum evolve from its beginnings. A major part of the attraction for me is all of the various interests that get discussed here. Some of them have been so ongoing that they have received their own forums here. And some of those interests are things that were below my radar until they came to my attention here. I expect that evolution will continue as the membership grows and changes. And look foward to it.

So here we are, looking at another change. Not really one that I can get behind and support, but I don't want to be in the way of letting others do something they enjoy. So I (grudgingly) go along with the second answer in this poll.

Just for clarification, does that mean cigarillos would also be off limits?

Regardless, I am in favor of the trading of tobacco here on B&B.
Not being an expert on these things, I can see a very distinct difference in the definition;

cig·a·rette/ˌsigəˈret/
Noun:
1. A thin cylinder of finely cut tobacco rolled in paper for smoking.

ci·gar/siˈgär/
Noun:
1. A cylinder of tobacco rolled in tobacco leaves for smoking.

One of my greatest pleasures in life is smoking my pipes and the occasional cigar. I have many beautiful Italian and English pipes I don't smoke and would love to be able to trade some for another smoker's unused pipes.

... I guess first and foremost this is a site dedicated to wet shaving, and secondarily dedicated to other "gentlemanly pursuits". At the extreme end of the scale I just fear we could end up being one big clearinghouse for selling used stuff...
This sums it up for me in terms of B&B and where I want to see it head. I'm primarily here for shaving related but when I recently purchased a new watch I asked here - for information from people I generally trust. Ditto for other items BUT if it was overwhelmed by the secondary stuff to be honest I might get frustrated enough to not bother.

In relation to the morality of tobacco and related products while an ex-smoker (a condition of marriage!) who would encourage all smokers to quit for their own health - 'free will' wins out in the context of a forum such as B&B for me. It is a close call though. The social harm of smoking as well as the personal health damage and the addictive nature mean that the potential promotion of smoking as a 'gentlemanly pursuit' is of great concern. The mere existence of the 'Brown Leaf' section and discussion of such pastimes though probably already steps over that mark and trading is probably not pushing the boundary further.

Bottom line - I'd prefer no tobacco related discussion on the forum but since there is then I wouldn't stop trading or PIFs

I think when the discussion moved to having a separate BST for tobacco products there may have been more merit to the idea than originally thought. Sure we can discuss the benefits as to what B&B’s core strengths are and how they are expanding but… tobacco causes some to have rather “emotional” responses. Especially by those who have given up on the habit.

If the legalities are all worked out, and we face the fact that B&B is more than just about shaving, then the only question (to me) is if we are going to alienate those who don’t want to be exposed to tobacco products and hence, the issue of its trade on a separate forum is legitimate in my eyes.

I know when I told my wife about this thread she stated with disgust (she hates my cigar smoking), “great and I thought you had moved onto a healthy habit!” Seriously, she’s already stated to me once since after seeing me on B&B, “looking at some cigar porn, sigh?” She’s never done that before with exception to her seeing me peruse CI – Cigars International. I wish I hadn’t told her! Anyway that’s neither here nor there.

I think keeping it separate is worth discussing as it’ll not “force” anyone into viewing. I know it sounds crazy but…

I think keeping our Brown Leaf threads - whether they be trades, PIFs, or whatever - in the Brown Leaf only is a good idea.

Some people want to avoid the topic of tobacco, and shouldn't be faulted for it. I started enjoying the Barber Shop a lot more once the armchair commando gun threads got moved out of there and I never go into the Great Outdoors subforum, so I completely understand.

This sounds like a reasonable compromise.

I would like to participate in trading, but I really have no issue limiting it to a particular area. Again, rules need to be clear and followed, but I am for it.

I like this idea! I'm all for trading and PIFs and whatnot, but I think they should be kept in here as well.

I think it's a sensible proposal. It may even color some folks thoughts on the matter. I suspect a good number of people wouldn't object to trades/etc being allowed, so long as they don't have to deal with them. Tucking them away in the subforum allows those guys that like that sort of thing to participate, while removing it from the immediate public eye.

Also, there has been a contingent that would love to see better categorization within the B/S/T. By keeping all Brown Leaf business within the Brown Leaf, we help weed out the items that the majority of membership may have no desire to deal with. It's a bit of the "not in my backyard" approach, but if it means still being able to share a hobby with my friends - albeit in an out of the way corner of B&B - then I'm all for it.

This has a potential to be a great benefit to members who frequent the Brown Leaf. With the aspect of trading it's going to maybe help some people try things they may not be able to obtain for whatever reasons and that's great! But I also don't want it cause any problems that may damage the great community we have here.

I've said it before I'm 100% on board for this but lets keep it in here.

I don't believe that this will drive anyone away. All of the topics on smoking when they were in the Barbershop certainly didn't, and neither does the Brown Leaf. At least I can't remember anyone objecting.

Not to be a tool, but no one is going to object to something that is legal - how can they? They simply turn away is all.

Might as well add my 2 cents, right?

I think tobacco trades and PIFs should be allowed on B&B, but I would wish to see it only take place in the Brown Leaf forum. I'm not a huge fan of the new BST setup*, and I would prefer the non-shaving forums to have their own, mini-BSTs.

*Yes, I've tried it and given it a fair shot.

+1 Keeping it isolated to the BL forum would prevent anyone that didn't want to see it from being exposed.

I also agree that the BST is a bit challenging to navigate and find what you are looking for, and adding BL items would only further complicate things. Breaking up the BST is probably another topic though.

I don't see any issue with it being done as long as there is some way to accurately determine the age of the participants.

I would hate to see the site get shut down due to a trasaction with someone who is not of age.
