People think they were just being spoiled divas when they hear about the "no brown M&Ms" clause, but it was there for a good reason.
They were one of the early bands to tour with several truckloads of gear that had very demanding requirements in terms of scaffolding, stage loading limits, electrical supply capacity, grounding, crowd control, etc. Many of the smaller venues had never hosted a band with these sorts of requirements and were possibly apt to take shortcuts. If the band or road crew found any brown M&Ms in the bowl (an easy thing to check), then clearly the locals had not read every line in the contract, and not all of the conditions of the contract were met. They could just cancel the performance, for safety reasons.
