What's a Canadian traveling box (or pass-around box)?
It's a box filled with wet shaving items that will travel across Canada. It can be anything like shaving creams, soaps, aftershaves, blades, brushes, etc. However, if decide to include a single-edge razor, make sure you leave a few blades in the box so any participant can use it. I will ship the box somewhere in Canada. When the run ends, if we get more participants on the way back, we could add them to amortize the shipping cost to send the box back my way.
What goes in the box?
Anything wet shaving related. Keep in mind that it needs to be something that you would use. You must look at size/weight over anything else. When exchanging an item, try to keep them around the same value.
A few examples:
-If you put a glass tub that contains a full shaving soap, it's likely to be heavy. Try to provide a properly labeled sample size, multiple samples, decants, etc.
-Do not add a pack of 100 blades, provide a pack that's 5-10 blades instead.
-If the item already exists, you might want to consider a different item (i.e. there are 12 Feather blades already, maybe a different brand if you want to add more blades).
How much does it cost?
Shipping the box and a bit of your time, that's it. If both participants agree to meet in person, that's fine. Right now, Canada Post offers pre-paid boxes (all under 5kg). Back in the day, we were well under 3kg so we should be able to either get a cheaper rate or use one of those prepaid boxes. For reference, Canada Post has them listed between 16.99$(extra small) and 32.99$(Large). You can post what you paid when mailing the box. That would give everyone else an idea of what's waiting for them.
I cannot say right now how much it will be as we did not start this yet. Previous Canadian Traveling Boxes were around 15-20$ to ship the box with a tracking number (mandatory if mailing the box). I can be mistaken but that's the number I have in mind. Hopefully, it's still around that price!
Any rules?
-Communication! Keep us updated!
-Qualified? BST rules apply - 50 posts/45 days on the forum minimum.
-Exchange! If you take 1 item out, you must put 1 item back in. You can add extra items but, keep the size/weight in mind. Only wet shaving stuff products that you would use!
-Timeframe! Try to keep the box for a reasonable amount of time. No need to send it out upon receiving it but, to put a number, you can keep the box for a maximum of 2 weeks.
-Keep it clean! Sanitize anything you use.
-Questions? Post here or PM me.
!!!Warning!!!
Historically, things can go wrong at any moment. The box gets lost, stolen, destroyed, catches fire, etc. Keep in mind that you could sign up for this and never get the box. Anything that goes in the box cannot be tagged as "exclusive" to the box so consider any item in the box as given to someone. Do not put that most prized razor in there thinking that you might get it back.
Now, what do I do?
First, you need to sign up. I will keep a separate list of who and where they are. I do not need your complete address but your city/province is good. I will compile a list and assign the path that the box will need to follow. Keep in mind that this will take a little while to get going so don't expect that the first participant will receive the box in 2-3 weeks. I'm aiming for Spring 2024 (I have aftershaves in mind that can freeze outside). This should give everyone plenty of time to sign up, prep the box, and get it on the way. We might start it a bit earlier, I will discuss this with the first few participants. The cut-off for signing up is a month from now. So let's say 9 February 2024.
Ok, I signed up, and received the box, what do I do?
-First, you need to post a picture of what's inside the box. It can be one or multiple pictures but make sure that you capture everything so everyone can identify what's in there. I will post something before sending it off to the first participant.
-Get the ball rolling as quickly as possible, contact the next participant when receiving the box. You might not log in to B&B every day so it may take a few days for the next person to reply. It's mainly to avoid delays in sending the box out.
-The fun starts now! Try and post about the items in the box in this thread. You don't need to post something about every single item but tell us what you like/disliked, with pictures as a bonus.
-When you are done, you can exchange/add items to the box. You can post a picture or write about it. If you are mailing the box, provide a tracking number that you will post here so that we can follow the box. Make sure that you labeled and packed everything properly. You don't want the mailman to smell like Brut Aftershave!
