Nice lather but not protective?

I’ve been shaving during the week with a cream (eShave) and sometimes with Saponificio Varesino. Now I started trying Cattie’s bubbles and I’ve shaved 3 times with it. I’ve whipped up probably some of my nicest lathers with it (really slick, dense, beautiful shine, perfect consistency). However, in every shave with CB I’ve gotten two or more nicks, whereas I’ve never nicked myself while using SV or eShave. It’s weird because the lather I get from eShave is not as nice, and I use it in the mornings when I’m still waking up. Could the extra slickness make the face more prone to nicks?

Catie’s Bubbles was one of the first soaps I tried when switching to traditional DE wet shaving. I always had aftershave burn when done, but canned goo and other soaps spared me from such. I thought it was me and my inexperience for a long time…but your post has me thinking differently now. Perhaps it’s not a soap for everyone. I don’t plan on going back to it since I’ve found soaps that work better for me.

I'm a beginner, but when I am having a particularly pleasant shave, I get greedy and make more passes than I should, and invariably pay for it with a nick or two. Maybe that's happening here?
It could definitely be user error. However, I’m doing exactly the same number of passes and strokes. Maybe the slickness contributes to less control in difficult areas, but I even nicked my mustache and that never happens

I think you have a point there. I feel a mild tingling when I apply the lather, but definitely some burning on the lips. Another thing I’ve noticed is I don’t get as close a shave as I do with the other two, which is also interesting because when I test something new I do it in a relaxed shave in the evening, opposite to my regular faster morning shave

Good, interesting question. I'm trying to reckon with more-or-less the inverse: hey, I like this artisan and these soaps . . . except they maybe don't lather readily, and that's kind of flattening the experience.

I haven't tried those soaps, but I have experienced the same with my soaps. I can whip up a perfect looking lather from almost anything now, but the level of protection isn't the same. It is most obvious when switching back and forth between soaps (like we all do), when you stick with the same soap for a week or two, it might turn out to be good (until you use the "better" soap again).

For reference my most protective soaps atm are: speick blue (cream), zingari sego base, stirling tallow.

I am not sure that a nice lather equal to a better shave. For me a very well hydrated lather, almost flat, feels better when shaving compared to the thick lathers a lot of people seems to appreciate.

Totally agree. I don’t like Santa’s beard lathers either, I work them up until they are kind of runny and shiny, not to the point of overkill when they have bubbles.

How does your skin feel immediately after the razor goes past? If' it's slightly sticky, you don't have enough water in the soap. Easy to get many of the easy to lather soaps too dry for actual shaving.

The only reason for using soap is to make your skin so slippery the razor slips instead of cuts it.

I get my best shaves with the lather is so wet it will drip off the razor.

Lather was well hydrated, lots of residual slickness after the razor passed. I usually make my lather in the bowl until it’s almost ready, then apply it to the face and and a bit more water in case it’s too dense, so I can usually gauge the correct level of hydration. I used to get drier lathers before I started doing this last step

SV doesn't require a lot of water to be slick... most other soaps need more. That's my guess... subconsciously applying more pressure to compensate for an improperly built lather

CB should be able to prove a shave every bit as good as SV, if not as luxuriously.
