What's new

New User

Hi there the name is DC. I have never used a DE razor before but I just bought a parker 22R. I have soap, cup, brush, and block of alum just in case in bound but I am here for tips, info, wishes of luck :w00t:. The brush and cup are edwin jagger and the soap is liggets. I am 21 years old and I have been shaving for about 4 years and I have tried electric razors, 2, 3, 4, blades, different creams basically if you can buy it at walmart or cvs then I have tried it. But nothing works the most I can grow is peach fuzz so far but I have never felt well shaved with anything I have tried. I feel stubble all over my face no matter what I do. So I have decided the DE is the next best bet. My dad tells me that he will have the car running waiting to take me to the hospital. Says he started out with a DE in the military and hated it. So I am here a DE Novice no past knowledge other then what I have gathered from lingering here over the past week and other places on the net. I have read the 22r's reveiw here on the forum I think from reading that I chose a good razor. But I am here for any other tips or ideas that may be offered. Thank you gentleman in advance.

Welcome to B&B, glad you found us.
Before your done, you will have shown your Dad the error of his ways, and he'll be using one too, LOL.

Check out the following page for Frequently asked questions;

Also look for the YouTube Videos of Mantic59, you can read and read, but when you see an expert doing it, and making lather, and giving the best tips available, there is just no comparison. Just search Youtube for "Mantic59" and you'll find them.

Remember that a DE is not a cartridge razor, so it will take some time for you to get the technique down.

Remember this if you don't remember anything else:
No Pressure
Proper Angle
Go Slow

No Pressure means NO pressure. Let the weight of the razor do the work. With a cartridge pushing against the face was necessary, with a DE it's a sure road to cuts and irritation.

Proper Angle means keeping the razor at the correct angle for cutting hair, but not irritating the skin. For example, if you are shaving your cheek, and the razor handle is too parallel to the floor, no cutting will happen, you will just wipe off the lather. If the handle is too parallel to your face, you may cut the hairs, but the edge of the blade will be scraping your skin and you'll get a bad case of razor burn.

Go Slow. If you think that you are going too slow, then go slower! Take short strokes and remember the idea here is to remove hair in passes, not all at once.

Good luck and ask lots of questions, there are some great people here!

Dude, welcome aboard!!

My best advice for you . . . take your time and don't rush your shave. It is a process, not an event.

Preparation is key - enjoy that nice brush you have and take time to make a good hot lather. Savor the warmth on your face as you lather up . . . give it time to work its magic.

Don't rush the razor, either. No pressure - slow, light, gentle strokes. Plan on re-lathering and taking a second pass.

If you haven't done so already, take a few minutes to study the You Tube videos by mantic59 . . . one of our fellow members. His advice is right on!!

Also - there is a wonderful bunch of guys here of all ages and backgrounds. We all enjoy the shaving process, and are glad to help both new and experienced alike. We work on the concept of PIF - pay it forward. Someday, you will be able to help another new shaver out!!

Feel free to ask anything, anytime!!

Welcome to the forums! Plenty of good information here.

I would guess that your Dad's bad experience with DE razors in the military was partly due to having to rush most of the time. You can get a reasonably quick shave with a DE razor; look for Mantic's video on a 10 minute shave. If you have to rush, though, skimp on prep, and use canned creams or gels, it probably won't be the best experience. As others have already said, take your time, particularly while you're new to it and just figuring things out.

Welcome DC. Great advice so far.

What brand of blades are you using?

Oh, and tell your dad he should call EMS. Does he really want blood stains in his car? :001_tt2:
