What's new

my wife told me: "i am now an SE convert"

No, she does not use them, she meant me using them. And it's a big deal comming from her. First, as my technique improved so did the way my shaves looked improved, and she is the main client and quality inspector for this product.
Second, she despises the idea of buying used razors, but it was the classy look of the Ever Ready 1912 chain-link handle that really got to her. I now keep it out on display
all the time and she wants me to get it gold plated... it is a rather nice display piece...

she wants me to get it gold plated...

Why not just buy another in gold? And then, of course, you can pick up a lather catcher in heavy silver plate. And a chrome plated OCMM. And... And... And...

The Ever-Ready 1912 with that same handle was my first Single Edge razor,I found it on a BST listed along with a GEM Damaskeene.I had never heard of either one of them,I passed on the Dammy and grabbed the ER because I liked it's looks more and figured even if I hated the shave it would be nice to have at least one SE around for their old school cool.

It sat a long time until I finally picked up some Walgreen's Stainless Steel SE Blades on my way home from a weekend motorcycle run....15 seconds into my first shave I was hooked and have only shaved DE once in the past 6 months since.

Those handles are also real nice to run with Shovelheads:

The last lot I got had the ER1912 and two Shovel heads, one with short handle and brass color chain link handle.
The latter was rather dirty, the color was dark brown with a lot green gunk. I kept it in the garage, hidden. I found out that lysol (industrial lysol) is very good on getting rid of that and on another thread, an emergency room doctor quoted 1-hour soak in 5% lysol as standard hospital procedure for sone equipment.
I have had it marinading in lysol for a day now. The handle was not submereged so the part that didn't touch it was still dark brown while the other is back to golden/brass color. I topped off the jar and let it keep soaking. I usually dont go that extreme but that was one dirty razor, but boy the fumes... gloves and ventilation are key.. .
I will post photos once it is clean.

After an hour breathing MAAS fumes i got it to shine which shocked me as it was deep dark brown when i got it.

Only after i got fully emotionally involved in this little project i noticed the left blade guard is broken which makes it unusable..

The only reason to buy into DE shaving is the same reason people chose the Microsoft platform over the Macintosh...lower prices and wide spread availability, and software abundance.

Same same, the VHS format beating out the better BetaMax format.

So it is, with DE blades, that they are still abundant and there are many types and options. I woud say the same is true with DE razors versus SEs...though the SE razors are many.

I have totally abandoned DE shaving. Sold off all my DE razors and will attempt to rid my closet of the tons of DE blades I stockpiled. The inconvenience with SE shaving is worth it. Oh, and I bought Macs all my life and my first VCR was a Sony BetMax.
