The box looks a tad beaten up and there are some scuff marks on the top of the razor itself - but hey, if the selle is correct it is fom the '30s. Though i will be looking at the date stamp when it arrives :biggrin1:

That's a great razor but I don't think you'll find a date stamp.

Really? Did Gillette not put them on these? How does one tell that it is a '30s vintage one? (Ha, has the newbie been sold a line by the seller? - Though even if it were later i would pobably have bid on it )

Tony --

Gillette didn't start marking date codes on the razors until '51. (oh, yeah, a *few* in '50) But the collectors and hobbyists here have a handle on the years of production of the various models, yours being from the '30s.

You got a good razor that should clean up nicely.

Cool thanks. THis leads me onto my next query...that of cleaning up as you said. What do people use to clean razors like this?

Cheers,
TOny

I was watching that one as well. Congratulations! That's a British Aristocrat #15. One the best shavers Gillette made and one of the most handsome razors, IMO!

Soak it with Scrubby Bubbles a few times and scrub with a soft toothbrush and dish soap in between. Should clean up nicely!

One question...not wanting to look like (too much of) a fool...What is scrubby bubbles? Is that a US brand soap / dishwash liquid / washing powder etc?

Thanks,
Tony.

Was watching that one too.

Congrats.

Yes it's a British Aristocrat #15.

It's Rhodium plated so hopefully it'll clean up well.

Brit razors don't have any date codes stamped on them, so any dates are based on blade codes with NOS razors or adverts for them or their US counterparts.

Mr Razor (Achim ), shows the #15 as 1938

He'll have some sort of documentary evidence and I'm guessing it's this:
http://mr-razor.com/Werbung/C 1938 No15, No19, No45, No46, No47.jpg

So with Brits, you don't really know if it was at the beginning of the run, the middle of the run or the end of the run, just an date when they were available.

Cleaning.....soak in boiled water, toothpaste and toothbrush scrub, rinse, soak, toothpaste scrub, rinse, soak, Silvo, rinse ( that's my normal routine ).

Other useful tools while cleaning , cotton tip, cotton bud, toothpick !

Nice pickup.

Is that plating nickel or rhodium? And what's the deal with the upside down liner in the top?

For cleaning, here's my routine for other than gold or silver razors w/o plastic or paint. CLR if needed for calcium or lime build-up, Scrubbing Bubbles or equal, Metalwax metal cleaner if corrosion is present, Toothbrush and mild toothpaste, Metalwax or Maas polish, finally a soft toothbrush and liquid dish soap to remove any polish residue and a dip in Barbicide.

Beautiful razor, BTW. It should clean up nicely.

Er....?:001_huh: Not too sure to be honest! I did notice the upside down liner though.

What are "Scrubbing bubbles"?

Sorry, Tony. Didn't notice your location.

Other good cleaning suggestions are rolling in although I do not recommend boiling. I use to do that early on but saw no great advantage over using household cleaners. Scrubbing Bubbles is a spray on foam that breaks down scum. Very effective on general soap residue and dirt. Don't know if it's available in your area, but I'm sure there must be an equivalent in the cleaning section of any grocer. Here's the logo:

Thanks Bill. SWMBO will possibly have something similar under the kitchen sink
