My new 3-Band Badger Brush

I just bought a new 3-band badger brush and I am very impressed with it. It's from Taconic Shave. I got this brush for only $33.00 on Amazon. I have owned a 2-band silver tip that cost me $125.00 and I like this one much better. It is very soft with just enough back-bone. It has a 22mm knot.
This brush to me is one of the best deals in shaving I have ever seen. It looks good too.

The brush is even softer than I thought it would be. It is really a good buy. I guess it will get even better when it breaks in a little more.

Someone please explain THREE BAND? Does that mean there are THREE Band Total holding the Brush Fibres in place, is that the Benchmark of Quality?

You might want to start a thread on this yourself. I will say that a 3-band is supposed to be softer than a 2-band.

Looks like a "pure" badger to me. Usually when we refer to three-band it's the silvertip (lighter tips).

I know Taconic sells what they call 100% Pure Three Band Badger. I'd never heard of pure referred to as 3-band but hey, there's always a first time. I like my pure badger brushes a lot although some shavers don't like the prickle.

Glad you're happy and enjoy the new acquisition!

This 100%. That is not a 3-band and very much looks like standard “pure” grade. 3-band is just that and has 3 distinct bands of color.

Name is not important as long as it works well for you!

My thought as well, but the old Shavemac pure grade had three distinctive bands, similar to this.

Here is a picture, showing a Shavemac three band (left) and two-band (right) of their D01 grade.
As you can see, the dark band on the left is very narrow, so you have three bands: light-dark-light.
The one on the right also has three band (!!), but the dark bad is very wide, so when the knot is set one sees only two band: light-dark (the third, light band, is inside the knot hole).

Just do not ask me from what part of the badger the hair is coming from.
Hope this helps you to understand the "bands" in badger knots. Boars have no banding at all, when they show a darker band, then this is dyed. Synthetic can have as many bands, or none at all.....the fibers are always dyed somehow.

The bands refer to the light and dark sections of the hair. Three-band has light, dark (middle), and light. Two-band only has dark and light at the top of the hair shaft visible

I would call the subject brush of this thread, a two band. Let me explain. All badger hair actually has three bands. What defines the difference between 2 band and three band, is the width of the 2nd band. The so called three band brushes have a narrower middle band. Many so called two band brushes have the lower band buried in the handle, so only the middle and top bands show.

This is not a disparaging comment on the subject brush. It appears to be a lovely brush no matter what it is called. What is most important of all is the lathering quality and shave experience.

Edit: I should have read the rest of the thread before responding. Rudy did a better job of explaining the difference including pictures.
