What's new

My attempt at milling a bar of MWF...

After a fairly successful weekend of milling my new bars of GFT, I decided to have a go with my TOBS Almond shave cream, it was a wonderful shave and the lather (my first time with real good soap) was so surprising I wiped it on my girl just so she could get in on the floaty goodness. Then today happened...

After soaking my tools, I gave my bar of MWF a whirl at making its way into my new Pyrex dishes, and well, pictures speak a thousand words, so here's the mess...

Has anyone experienced this when milling MWF? Was it a bad bar, possibly old or dried up? What's the story here..?

Its OK, just dump it all in the dish, add a 1/2 shotglass of water, snap on the lid and walk away for a few days.

Hoping for the best, I followed Jim's instructions (Greatly appreciated might I add), and we will see what happens, hoping for the best.

Does look a bit of a mess! Mine grated just fine.

As said above, cram it all into your container, press it down, add a little water and let the magic commence. It'll be fine.

I would like to add to this great recommendation. Cut up the remainder of your soap in to small pieces, then mill and add to your jar. I grated mine by hand and packed my down adding a bit of water.

I see three things when I look at the picture...1) A Half puck of MWF in the back, 2) A half bar of clay on the green lid, 3) a bowl of crack in the pyrex dish....is there something you want to confess

I can't help but laugh for some reason, LOL. you should have put it through a grater, then added hot water and pressed it down.

Really? What did you think the next step was after making dust out of it? The point was the previous soap I milled didn't come out like dust, it grated like cheese.

Yeah, my MWF didn't grate to dust, something is definitely odd there. My immersion blender has a food chopper attachment, kinda like a mini food processor. I used that, not a hand grater.

Most soaps given the right conditions would end up like the MWF shown above. The MWF seems to be the most prone to drying out of the soaps that I have. Remember, soap is primarily salts of fatty acids.

Food chopper huh ... how does that work for you? I was afraid it would grind everything to a paste.

Works pretty well. The MWF made a racket because it's such a hard soap, but it worked well. In practice it turns the soap into little pebbles. The blender looks pretty much like this one. I don't think a regular blender would work, this is probably more like a food processor in action.
