Modifying hardware on a TM

I have a TM strop with Dee rings. I've found I like holding the strop from the caps instead of the rings so I decided to remove them. I got a screwdriver and tried to open the Chicago screws to take out the rings but the screws simply spin in place and I can't seem to get enough purchase on them to loosen them. I don't want to do anything hasty and scratch or strip them, does anybody have any recommendations how best to secure the screws enough to loosen? Thanks!

I get some scotch tape sticky side up on my finger to hold the smooth side of the screw still. It might leave a residue on the leather so...

birdflu's suggestion seems better tho

A pair of good pliers can be <gently> used to grasp the very edge of the nut side of the fastener. It does not take much pressure on the pliers at all and if you are careful, will not mark the flange on the nuts. It should not mark the leather at all. If you do happen to ding up the nuts, Chicago screw sets (the screw and the nut) are available very inexpensively.

Bending the strop gently right where the fastener is helps to expose the edges of the nut, it sort of rolls the leather away from the nut flange so you can get a grip on it.

Speaking of horse butts…
I assemble all of my strops over a rubber pad. It provides just enough friction to hold the smooth side of the screw while I tighten it. Removal over a rubber pad is what I suggest. Plier will work but you risk marking the leather caps.
