merkur progress - a few questions if I may?

Seriously considering getting one of these, just wanted to know a couple of things, as price checking on-line I have found a few things which I never knew about. And I wanted to see if it was true or just poor/different descriptions.

1) Do all of these razors come with a plastic box inside the cardboard box like --> http://www.shavingstuff.com/archives/002748.php

2) Is this really a longer handle, or the same item being sold at a higher price with a different description, I ask because I have only seen it on this one website.

1) No, not all progresses come with the plastic travel case. Most will come in a simple carboard box with a small sheet of instructions and a free Merkur blade.

2) Yes. Merkur makes two flavors of the Progress - the regular length (500) and newer longer handled model (510). The longer handle version is fairly new so not all of the vendors offer it, yet. In addition to the two factory versions, there are members on this forum that make upgraded metal knobs/fittings to replace the factory plastic knob.

The progress is a dynamite razor, my favorite.

The regular Progress has a 2-3 mm longer handle than Merkur HD and Gillette Super Speed, so if your fingers are not too thick, you might prefer it over the new longer handle. The progress handle is slippery, so the Mantic's advice of holding your finger under the knob is very recommended in my opinion.

Agree entirely with jkh.

For what it's worth, I think the longer handle provides better control given that the surface is kind of slick.

I got mine at a good price from BullGoose Shaving (thanks, Phil).

You can't go wrong with a Progress. The plastic handle is so 1950's so I opted for a Stainless steel custom knob. You will find Three guys who all do really fine work on the Shaving Boards. I like the new Long handle Progress. I only go to my Slant's for a change of pace.

I have watched some clips on youtube, Mantics as well as some unknowns and after seeing the images I think I am at this moment in time siding with getting a Futur instead. Mainly due to the longer looking handle.

I have both, they are great.

Note that the Futur is a little less manueverable because it has a bigger head and is generally heavier and bigger, still it is not a problem just the mergress is slightly easier to shave with.

If I had to choose one over the other i'd choose the Futur because I like hefty razors.

What is the length of the handle of the Futur compared to the Progress?

Well in the end I ordered a Futur, a tub of Vulfix Persian Musk Shaving Cream and a tub of Cyril Salter Mint Shaving Cream.

I know I didnt order what I was initially asking about, but I appreciate your help.

I like the plastic knob it gives this razor a vintage look!

I've got the merkur progress with the long handle! Its gives a very good and smooth shave. This is my no.1 razor voor daily use. This razor will beat all Mach3 en Gillette fusion power razors.

The Merkur Razor is a real razor for a real man!

Another thing to consider is that the Futur is significantly more aggressive than the Progress. I believe that the lower settings on the Futur correspond to the highest numbers of the Progress.

The futur and the long-handled progress are about the same length.

And yes, a 5 setting on the progress looks like the same gap as the 1 on the futur.

Both are great shavers. The progress is more user-friendly.
