Razor wars - DSCosmetics AX 1.55SB versus Yaqi Sentinel 1.50SB

Is it swell time?
Nice review!I'm kind of curious about how much these two razors differ from the original wr2?
Paging Glenn @megamac - I believe he has shaved with all so he can provide input. I read on another forum that the AX comes pretty close. Not exact of course, but close.

I have never shaved with a WR2. I had an opportunity to acquire one last year and turned the offer down. In hindsight that might have been a less intelligent decision perhaps. Although I stand by my conclusion that I have enough razors and having a WR2 in the mix would seriously increase my RRA (Razor Rotation Anxiety).

A Wolfman is a Wolfie is a Wolf. I think Wolfman razors are a fine example of craftsmanship and excellence and while many of their models aren't to my liking, The WR 2 1.55 in SS or TI is at another level and probably one of my fav Razor heads of all time. The ability to maintain the smoothness with high efficiency and yet without the ability to bite will always be something that I will always respect and salute James for his craftsmanship.

The DS Cosmetics AX 1.55 in Ti is truly the closest you can come to experiencing a Wolfie at a fraction of the cost. DS or Dishi are masters of cloning and even their new Ti handles, one of which mimics the Paradigm Diamondback is pretty bang on for one who cannot afford a Paradigm. The AX 1.55 is smooth and in Ti it is a joy to use as it gives the shaver great control and speed specially if a touch up is needed. Having said that it still trails behind the WR 2 in finish and shave delivery, for me the Canadian original is pretty flawless. Let your attention stray too much while using the AX and it will bring you back into focus with a nick or a weeper. I have never had any a nick, weeper or skin irritation while using mine. I'll be honest, I can't afford a WR 2 1.55 even though I have used one for an entire month in the past but the AX is good enough for me and I love it to bits.

Unlike common belief, Yaqi does not clone but modifies. Like the Gibbs was modified into a popular modern day adjustable then Yaqi's theory is 'why not'. Many stamped out the Sputnik as a Hone copy but having shaved with both I can vouch that they are very different razors and I loved the Sputnik, brilliant shaver once you've figure it out. So, the Yaqi Sentinel is on those lines, Wolfman like in appearance but a very different shave experience. It drifts pretty far from what the AX aims to do in the Wolfie WR 2's shadow. It is a smooth shaver and packs in great efficiency but it isn't a Wolfie like shave. The Sentinel 1.5 OC drifts even further away from the WR 2 with smooth rounded teeth and yet a smooth and extremely close shave delivery. I love both Yaqi heads and have the highest degree of respect for what they do, specially for the Asian market and those who are struggling with managing finances yet trying to keep their wet shaving hobby alive.

So if you have a WR2, skip the AX for sure and maybe the Sentinel SB too but the Sentinel 1.50 OC will offer you something very different from those razors.

Great comparison and fantastic information here. I was waiting for the AX 1.55 to resurface in SS. But I am falling in love more and more with my Sentinel 1.5 SB, that I have successfully avoided purchasing it so far. I am very tempted though, specially after @megamac 's post

@Chelko , I love the Sentinel too, terrific shaver both the SB and the OC variants. Good to have you back in action here Mate.

The 1.55 AX is milder and not quite as efficient as the Yaqi 1.5 OC. I already did some testing with resurfacing stubble and pure skin, the Yaqi can flay skin, the AX is milder with less exposure, still very efficient. While better for daily use, it cannot quite match the raw efficiency of the Yaqi 1.5 OC, but it will be friendlier to the skin and less risk involved handling it.

I would rather say take a look at the Floating Head, this Barbasol Floating Head clone. @uptown and @Mr Konrad Dundee like it a lot, apparently. I also find it very interesting.
