So you're saying there's a chance of being French?

Reference "dumb and dumber."
Actually, yes. In History of the English Speaking People, Churchill mentioned Iberians setting in England over 1000 years ago. At that time I would imagine that there was a separation in the term France and other Iberian countries (Spain and Portugal), but I am unsure what he thought when he used the word.

Yes, it is hard to say what he meant without notes or other information. I'd be willing to bet, though, that he chose that term in order to carefully refer to the culture if the people(s) that made it over to the island of Great Britain some 1,000 years ago or so, rather than to political boundaries that did not exist then. That history would be both overly complicated and irrelevant to Churchill's work.

Modern usage says Spain and Portugal. I would tend to lean that way, as people were fleeing the Roman Army around that time frame. France tended to be associated with Gaul.

Well, that's just it. There were no "Spain" or "Portugal" 1,000 years ago (although the northern part of what would become Portugal was well on its way to doing so), and the same Celts that made more of in impression in present day France also had run roughshod over the northern half of Iberia and made their mark before the Romans showed up and, a few hundred years or so later, were escorted off by the Visigoths. Then, there's the whole Muslim conquest and occupation of southern Iberia for a good few centuries prior to the second millennium and a few hundred years into it.

In other words, it's a lot more than Churchill cared to get into with his work, not to mention a minute steak and eggs at the diner. :)

Yep- the book was about the English speaking people, after all.

It's not in town but a few miles out on 290. Here's the address:
6120 US HWY 290 East, Fredericksburg, Texas 78624

Sons’ friend’s family became homeless this evening. They are now staying in the little studio apartment above our business office. They need help, no doubt about that. I refuse to let my fellow people suffer and am glad we can help but i Have no idea what the next step is. Not sure how I feel about this.

You've helped them survive for now and that's what's important. They can't figure out what's next until that's taken care of. I'm sure you'll look back on this and be glad you did what you could.

First night on vacation, about 6 miles out of Fredericksburg, TX in a cabin. Just listening to crickets and frogs while enjoying a pipe.

Single mom. Two teenage kids. Low wage Walmart job. I feel for them. I don’t even know how to start the what’s next conversation or who to refer them to. It is good they are safe dry and warm.

It is. I do wonder what the crickets are saying to each other. Love songs to attract a mate? Here’s a good place for food and rest? Strength in numbers? Good night, Jim Bob? Either way, it’s relaxing.

Probably something like, "Get off my lawn!"
