What's new

I realized that I began too fast. Don't know what to do so many razors blades creams.

I am into wet shaving for about 3 months.

Meantime I have been reading this forum and ordering many things people say that is good.

Now I realize that I have more than 30 types of blades, more than 20 razors, more than a dozen creams and some brushes, and I am lost between all those things. I don't know what to get in every shaving.

It seems impossible now to find the best combination, so many variables.

At least I like most combinations of blade/razor/cream I tried (anything seems much much better than "old" Mach 3 and can foam), except for the milder razors.

Should have listened more experienced people and went into this slowly.

edw, most of us have done something similar. For me, I started to progress once I found a blade I liked and kept that the same. Ideally, change only one thing at a time after that.

Just stop where you are.

Start using all that you now have and don't worry about what else is out there

Narrow it down to a few favorites and use the rest randomly (once a week or so).

I have so many razors and blades that I go several months sometimes before using the same razor or blade again.

most go this path , but few realize, I myslef am fully satisfied and have narrowed it down by 80% sold all the not needed things- my soaps and creams i am good for years to come , 250 razor blades, 8 brushes, 4 DE,s--------- and i am set, still have to much but set

I already narrowed to very favorite razors: SS red tip, slants 37 and 39c, Muhle R41 and Merkur Futur. Milder ones are not for me.

Gillette platinum black blades seems to be much superior to others. But I keep rotating among other blades as I did not find a really bad blade until now.

Most creams are OK; TOBS, GFT and Musgo Real gives me a softer aftershave skin.

As a aftershave I stick with alum block and, when needed, Nivea balm.

What to do with all other razors ? Keep and try again some day ? Sell or give away ? What you do with other things when you find what you think is best ?

Sorry, I thought you were posting that there was an issue you wanted some advice on

Yes it would be nice.

I just hope my wife never open my shaving stuff box. At least not before 2033 when I will run out of blades (if I do not buy any one more until there).

I am glad she never asked why I keep 7 razors and 7 creams in the bathroom ( the rest of things are well hidden).

One for every day of the week, that's why!

Just use more product, shave the cat, do some practice lathering, shave twice a day, break in some new brushes, buy some more brushes that need to be broken in...and ALWAYS throw in something for the Mrs so you can show her it's not just about you!

Ah the simple mind of SWMBO

As long as all razors are silver and all brushes have white handles they all look the same.

As long as I only have 2 silver razors and 4 white handle brushes out on the counter I only have 2 razors and 4 brushes.

It's tough living with only 2 razors and 4 brushes

Hehehehe. Yes, we all did it. I agree with an earlier post....find a blade that you like and vary the other stuff. Personally, I use Astra's 95% of the time, with an occasional Feather (when I'm feeling frisky) but I just have fun with my razors, creams, soaps, and brushes. They are ALL so good, I don't thing I ever get a bad combination.

The main variable is combine one razor with one blade. Trying to combine 30 types of blades with my four favorite razors makes me crazy.

And I always think about trying a new blade (but wich one ?) with one razor that I did not like before just to check if it will be different this time.

This man is a genius. No woman can keep track of 7 at a time, so he can rotate through his inventory with impunity. I keep two in the bathroom and they get repurposed for her purposes on occasion and with only two, she can recall from last week that one might be different.

EDW is my hero.

Haha i like that!
i have a mix of handle colors...I'll have to be careful how I rotate them

I had similar issues to you.

The trick is to start categorising by setting a standard among each of the blade, razor and soap/cream and then to start comparison trials.

I picked my Merkur 33C as my standard razor, and used Gillette Super Thin stainless steel as my standard blade (I put them in all my razors), and Trumpers cream as my standard cream.

So, when I was testing a new soap or cream, I'd use the Merkur 33C and Gillette Super Thin blade. That gave me a feel as to which soaps and creams were good, and which I thought to be average or poor.

When I was testing razors, I'd test them with a Gillette Super Thin blade and Trumpers cream. This gave me a feel as too which were more aggressive and which were mild and which were ultra mild (e.g. I found my Weber DLC, Lord L5 and Big Roc razors were so mild that they didn't work properly with Trumper's cream - I had to put Feather or Astra SP blades into the Weber and Big Roc to make them work well).

When testing blades, I initially tested them with the Merkur 33C and Trumpers cream - finding which were ultra sharp (like Astra SP) and which were very mild (like Shark Stainless steel).

Then you start discovering interesting things - like the poorest cream I have, works quite well with my Weber DLC and Astra SP. And that my Merkur Bakelite razor which I had greatly disliked, wasn't too bad with a Shark blade.

Anyhow, that's how I had fun and made sense of my many purchases.

If you have enough stuff to last you till 2033, well, most of it won't go off. What's the big deal. It'll only be a problem if you suddenly discover you like electric shaving or some new cartridge razor better.
Cheers,
Renato

Definitely don't do that. Every option has its fans and you'll end up with one of everything. Work with a smaller subset of products. Determine your preferences. Then learn to read between the lines for things that sound suited to you rather than just randomly buying things that people (who may have entirely different needs/preferences than you) say are good. Always keep in mind that "good" is highly subjective no matter what the topic. Always consider the source. This applies to anything -- not just wetshaving.

What you do with other things when you find what you think is best ?

BST.

It's really your call to make though.

You don't seem to have too many things, in my opinion. Hee hee. Everything looks normal and you may even need a few more things. Boa sorte com tudo, mue amigo.

I know you were just joking but you've never owned a cat have you? Call your doctor for an appointment just before you shave the cat :D

Have you tried SEs at all yet? What about straight razors? And what kinds of razors and brushes do you have now? We like pictures here....
