Question about Razors

Morning everyone!

For the last year, I've been using my Gentleman Jon DE Razor as seen below. I like it, but I have no frame of reference for if it is a good razor. I'm debating on spending some money in the next few weeks to upgrade. Is it worth the investment or is the razor I have just fine? I figured blades were the most important thing, so I upgraded those to Astra Superior Platinums, along with my soap and brush from their starter-set counterparts. Is the difference going to be that much more noticeable? I was looking at the Merkur 34g as everyone seems to have really nice things to say about it, it isn't too aggressive, and is affordable. I don't want to do an adjustable razor right now anyways, too many variables. Any guidance, suggestions on razors, or feedback would be great!

Are you getting a good shave and do you enjoy using your current razor? If the answer is 'yes' then you do not 'need' another razor and can save your money. In fact anything you buy may not be an 'upgrade' at all as your current razor looks perfectly fine to me. Of course that is no reason to not purchase another; if you think you will enjoy buying and trying other razors, and it is within your budget, then do so but don't expect a huge improvement if you are happy with your current setup. I have tried enough razors to know that there is very little difference between any of them and price has little or nothing to do with how much a razor suits me and how much I like it. If you like yours then stick with it my advice, if not then buy a vintage Tech 👍

Read my mind, I figured there wasn't a huge difference. I've had my eye on this 1932 Made in Canada Tech for a while, especially for only $25 with free shipping. You were the tipping point on my purchase, so it'll be here in a few days! Won't use it for a while as I'm working on my lather and getting that consistent and I don't wanna change too much at once, but it sure will look pretty on my shelf.

The Techs are great razors, it's a good one to try out.

I do think there are differences between razors, blades, soaps, and so forth, but it's pretty idiosyncratic to the person and what else they have and like, and price and quality aren't always closely related.

You might get to a place where you're thinking "I like my shave except for X", in which case it might be good to research what causes X and look for solutions. Or if you just want to experience a razor because it seems cool for historical, price, or design reasons, do that.

I started with Techs, and it was like an epiphany for me. I loved them. But I realized they felt bitey to me, and so I migrated to lower exposure razors. Currently I use a Slim, Superadjustable, and Muramasa. (I probably also just like adjustables for random reasons.)

It might be worthwhile to try a blade sample pack, or just get a couple of different 5-10 blade tucks to try. Blades can make a big difference, and there's rarely any way to predict what someone will like it seems. Of course, if you're happy with the blades you're using, continue on. But you'll have to replace them at some point (probably, although that's another issue), and it can be fun to try out blades.

I've been looking into getting a blade sample pack, I just don't know the best place. Any suggestions on some blades to try? I just got 100 Astra Superior Platinums as I've read good things, but you can never have too many blades. I usually use each side once before getting a new blade. Is that wasteful or am I getting good use out of each?

Why not try here?

Beat you to it! Entered earlier this week. Thank you though, any blades you would recommend trying?

I dislike known very sharp blades such as Feather, Bic and Nacet. I found Astra Platinum/Stainless, Lord Platinum, and Bluebird to be fine, but my favourites now are Rapira, Voskhod, and Ladas blades. They are made in Russia which is an issue for some people but together with vintage blades these are now the only DE blades I use.

First question is what do you expect a New Razor to do the old one does not do.

Second question is what is it you do not like about the shave you get with current Razor?

My current razor is cheap in feel and is having some coating issues, I am hoping a new razor will look a bit better, and feel nicer in the hand. I also just wanted to try something new and see if I even notice a difference.
