What's new

How often do you shave?

I shave daily, ever since using straights I am able to do so.
Choosing your own stones and finding what works for you really did the trick for me.
I couldn't get a DE razor and blades to work for me personally, not daily.

Same here. When I get irritation from straight razor shaving it disappeares few hours later. In DE shaving irritations stay several days.

There's no safety bar on an SR. SE and DE razors depress the skin, albeit by a small amount by virtue of the dragging of the razor safety bar in front of the blade as it travels across the skin. That's why skin specialists, barbers and top models (female) still prefer and will recommend an SR shave in addition to minimizing/preventing irritation
I honestly am not looking to argue. But what about open combs.

when you think about it the open comb still physically depresses the skin in the region in front of the blade. Why don't top class barbers use them instead of a shavette?
Thank you for the reply I appreciate it.

Maybe because most people think of straights when it comes to a barbers shave.

I know if I went for a shave at the barbers and pulled out a DE I'd be asking him what the heck was he playing at.

I shave every day, it takes four passes if I want perfection.
The whole routine takes 20 relaxing minutes.
The straight razor is a lovely mild tool to shave with and my face likes me for it.
I think my beard grows fast and I don’t like the scrubby, itchy feeling of stubble.
A good straight razor shave gives me perfect bbs which lasts all day and most of the night yet the stubble mysteriously reappears in full by the next morning.

I couldn't have said it better.

BTW, hair grows fastest in the wee hours of the morning before awakening.

Like others, I shave daily. It is zen and relaxation before a stressful day. I shave with an aggressive DE but plan on going to an AC Shavette soon. I may eventually go to an SR. We shall see.

Even though I only go in the office twice a week, I shave every M-F in the evening with the DE's. I normally with two DE's. One Started, one Closer..unusual is a 2 pass + minor touch up around the pie hole.
Weekends SR for both days whenever I fits best...
In a hurry, rare...will grab one of my slants..

A well honed traditional straight razor is gentler than a shavette (replaceable blade straight razor). However, both will give you an enjoyable shave. The traditional straight razor will require you to buy a strop and mineral oil unless it is stainless. You can get a good Ralf Aust or Dovo brand new for less than $90 and I know a place to get a good quality strop inexpensively (not Chinese). Then, you will need to pay someone to hone it properly for you (you will get around 80 shaves before needing to do it again...more as your skill grows). There are some good honers on this forum. If you buy from some places they professionally hone the razors when you buy the razor free of charge and they will be ready to go. (see: the invisible edge dot com)

Every day. I’m from a time that men did not go out in public unshaven. AKA, a dinosaur, lol.
My dad always said a man isn't dressed for public until he's showered, shaved/groomed and wearing a collared shirt tucked with a belt. I rarely saw him not dressed for public even at home... maybe when we'd go fishing at 5:00am. I'm not nearly that strict, but showered and shaved at the least.

My dad was pretty similar. Pressed Pants and Shoes (polished). He never had a BEARD or a MUSTACHE. Rarely did he show his stubble either...
I believe it was a combination of the times, upbringing, Army ( Korean war / bronze metal), & just who he was...

But also made think of this song.
Not Really Well Groomed.....but it sorta on that theme

Thanks Doc. I am going to start with a folding feather dx Shavette using ax blades. My goal is to see if I like it and can do the motions. Knowing that I love a close shave, I will likely go from guarded blades to exposed ac blades pretty fast.

From there, my next jump wouid be to a straight. I will ping you when I am there. I follow a few good YouTubers and I am always in awe on how easy they make it look. I know it takes time. Dr Matt and Dappershaves are two of my favs.

Thank you for your input!

I enjoy my shavettes but I love my straights. They are just more comfortable for me. Have fun with your new adventure.
