Gillette slim adjustable - proper use

I am new to the adjustable vintage world...so forgive me in advance if I ask something that is trivial. First, are there any ways of handling the razor that will actually break the adjustable mechanism? is it OK to turn the adjustment dial which the razor is in closed position? Is the #1 the most agressive or the least aggressive?

First congrats on trying out a slim, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. As for the razor, there should not be any breakable parts if you are handling it under normal conditions. If you drop it in the shower or on the floor that's when you may run into problems like bending the bar, or knocking a door out of alignment. The rest can be answered by the original instructions to a 60's slim. Neat reading too. Post back to let us know how it shaves

Great...perfect...Ill read the instruction...I just located this little find at an antique shop for 8.00 or so...bought it a few months ago and forgto about it until last week and I sprayed scrubbling bubbles on it the razor and let it sit...then I read DO NOT Spray scrubbing bubbles and let remain on razor for fear of the paint coming off...so the moment I make it home tonight Ill run it under water to get the scrubbing bubbles off...worst case scenario Ill re-brush in the numbers....Ill try using the razor tomorrow and post my results

Toothpick

Needs milk and a bidet!
i didn't read anything that said it was OK to adjust the dial while in the closed position, nor did i read anything that said it was NOT OK. so someone that has one would have to let us know because im curious to this as well. and would it be safe to assume if its ok to do so on one adjustable its ok to do so on them all?

It is easiest to adjust when the doors are open because there is no pressure on the dial.
It isn't likely to cause any harm aside from creating fractionally more wear and tear on the metal than would be with the doors open.

In fact on my '67 Aristocrat (Gold Slim) it is quite hard to change the setting with the doors closed, which is a good thing (in my oppinion) as I would not like the setting to change while I am shaving.

+1 Also remember marketing most likely had just as much say as engineering when it came to writing the drivers manual.

had my first shave with my slim adjustable and what an awesome experience!! Plus, I did read a thread where it stated its not recommended to change the setting while doors are closed as the angle of the blade gets skewed a bit...plus like posted above Im sure it would be difficult to accomplish since the doors are torque closed

My attitude to mechanical things is, if it feels wrong it is wrong.
I don't adjust the setting while the razor is tightened.

For a properly working Gillette Adjustable, the adjustment can be made either with or without the blade "locked down." The locking process simply compresses a spring that takes up the various amount of slack that exists in the assembly dependent on the adjustment setting. If you adjust up with the doors closed, the process simply compresses the spring a little more. Nothing will break. If you adjust down, the spring relaxes. Again, no harm.

If the spring is gunked and won't compress, you probably don't have enough strength in your fingers to turn the collar up or break your razor.

The instructions did not directly address the question, but certainly implied that adjustments could be made anytime.

I've seen a lot of posts regarding these razors . . . the one I've never seen is "Guess what? I adjusted my Slim with the doors closed and my razor broke in two!!"
